For the first five weeks of the season, No. 3 Miami did not have to leave home.

The Hurricanes played their first four games at home and were on bye last weekend. Miami finally hits the road for a high-stakes rivalry in its Atlantic Coast Conference opener versus No. 18 Florida State on Saturday in Tallahassee, Fla.

The contest was on track to be a top-10 clash before the Seminoles (3-1, 0-1 ACC) stubbed their toe in a 46-38 double-overtime loss at Virginia last week.

Still, it will be the first time these teams face off while both ranked since 2016. The two programs, which have won a combined eight national titles since 1983, have traded off successful seasons over past the eight years.

"We always knew this as the best rivalry in football," said Miami coach Mario Cristobal, who played for the Hurricanes from 1989-92.

While Florida State limps into this game off an upset defeat, Cristobal knows not to take the Seminoles lightly -- not after what they did to then-No. 8 Alabama in a resounding 31-17 win to begin the season.

"Getting ready for a very talented, physical and well-coached Florida State team that is playing at a high level," Cristobal said. "Statistically in the top 10 in just about every meaningful category."

That's certainly true with regard to Florida State's offense. Even after the loss, the Seminoles still lead the nation in scoring offense (53.0 points per game) and total offense (600.0 yards).

While those yardage numbers certainly are skewed by games against East Texas A&M and Kent State, Florida State still managed 514 total yards in the loss to the Cavaliers. The Seminoles have surpassed the 500-yard mark in three straight games for the first time since 2013.

The defense, though, took a sizable step back at Virginia. After the Seminoles began the season by holding Alabama to 341 yards of offense, 87 rushing yards and 17 points, Virginia gouged Florida State's defense to the tune of 440 yards, 211 rushing yards and six touchdowns, twice as many as the team allowed in its first three games combined.

"Just way too many little errors," Florida State defensive coordinator Tony White said. "Got to go back through and adjust during the week and make sure that we get that shored up, because we're going to see that again."

The Seminoles will be facing a more talented offense this week as the Hurricanes come to town. While Miami (4-0, 0-0) hasn't put up similarly gaudy numbers, the Hurricanes' offense has been quite effective in wins over then-No. 6 Notre Dame, then-No. 18 South Florida and two weeks ago vs. Florida.

Aided by a strong offensive line and a talented, deep pool of skill-position talent, new Miami quarterback Carson Beck has guided the offense well, completing 73.2 percent of his passes for 972 yards, seven TDs and three interceptions.

Florida State coach Mike Norvell has first-hand familiarity with Beck from the QB's time at Georgia, when Beck led the Bulldogs to a 63-3 demolition of a depleted Seminoles squad in the Orange Bowl at the end of the 2023 season.

"You can see that here in Miami he's feeling very comfortable with what they're asking him to do and what they've been able to accomplish here in the early part of the season," Norvell said of Beck.

Miami's defense, which leads the ACC in opponents' scoring (11.5 points per game) and total yardage allowed (244.5 per game), will also serve as quite a test for Florida State's potent offense.

Former U.S. Ryder Cup captain and Hall of Famer Tom Watson apologized on behalf of American fans for the behavior at Bethpage Black this past weekend.

Watson took to social media Monday morning to both congratulate Europe for beating the United States 15-13 in the Ryder Cup on Sunday, and to apologize for the harassment that was thrown their way at the iconic public course on Long Island.

"I'd like to congratulate Europe on their victory. Your team play the first few days was sensational," Watson wrote on social media. "More importantly, I'd like to apologize for the rude and mean-spirited behavior from our American crowd at Bethpage. As a former player, Captain and as an American, I am ashamed of what happened."

I'd like to congratulate @RyderCupEurope on their victory. Your team play the first few days was sensational.More importantly, I'd like to apologize for the rude and mean-spirited behavior from our American crowd at Bethpage. As a former player, Captain and as an American, I…

— Tom Watson (@TomWatsonPGA) September 29, 2025

Watson won 39 times on the PGA Tour in his career, including eight major championships. He won the British Open five times, most recently in 1983. The 76-year-old played on four Ryder Cup teams himself, and served as the U.S. captain twice — first in 1993, when the Americans beat Europe in England, and again in 2014 when they fell in Scotland.

While rowdy behavior is both expected and encouraged at the biennial event between the United States and Europe, there were several clear instances where fans in New York crossed the line this past weekend. European star Rory McIlroy called that out on Sunday night after their victory, as both he and his wife, Erica, faced the brunt of it.

McIlroy had to repeatedly step away from his ball during his match with partner Shane Lowry on Saturday afternoon, and the PGA of America sent out extra security to walk with them halfway through the round. A fan threw a drink at McIlroy and Erica on Saturday afternoon, and the event's emcee actually stepped down on Sunday morning after she joined in with the crowd in chanting, "F*** you, Rory!" over the microphone.

There was even one instance where McIlroy fired back at the crowd and told a fan to "shut the f*** up!" after they were chirping at him. He then stuck his approach shot with within a few feet, which he later said felt "very f***ing satisfying."

— Brendan Porath (@BrendanPorath) September 27, 2025

McIlroy described it as "unacceptable and abusive behavior" from the American fans.

"I think golf should be held to a higher standard than what was seen out there this week," McIlroy said. "Golf has the ability to unite people. … It teaches you how to respect people. Sometimes this week, we didn't see that. So, no, this should not be what is acceptable in the Ryder Cup."

Justin Thomas, who played against McIlroy and Lowry on Saturday, was repeatedly seen trying to tame the crowd.

"I think that anybody that was out there could pretty blatantly tell you that there was some things said," Thomas said. "Cam [Young] and I said it to Shane and Rory yesterday that we felt for them. It was unfortunate.

"Cam and I just wished that we gave them something to cheer for instead of people to cheer against. I think that was kind of the main consensus of the last two days, that we weren't giving them enough to cheer for, and they were just trying to help us win. I guess that's the New York fans for you."

NBA action is finally back.

All 30 teams have now reported for training camps, the first preseason game will tip off Thursday, Oct. 2 between the New York Knicks and Philadelphia 76ers in Abu Dhabi, and teams are starting their campaigns with the same objective in mind: hoisting the Larry O'Brien trophy at the end of the season.

That, however, remains a long way off, as most teams will begin practices this week, looking to shake off summer rust and get into shape. In any case, everyone is chasing the defending NBA champion Oklahoma City Thunder, who have an excellent chance to become the first team to repeat in eight seasons.

Here are USA TODAY Sports' NBA power rankings, with all 30 teams having reported for training camps:

1 / 36NBA stars strike a pose during photo sessions for 2025 media dayShai Gilgeous-Alexander, Oklahoma City ThunderNBA power rankings – training camp edition1. Oklahoma City Thunder

The Thunder have a team built to win for years to come. Can they maintain their edge and focus over a grind of a season to become the first team to repeat as champions in eight years?

2. Denver Nuggets

The Nuggets had a stellar offseason, and Cameron Johnson figures to add a new dimension to Denver's offense.

3. Houston Rockets

Losing veteran point guard Fred VanVleet to a torn ACL shouldn't dampen all the enthusiasm they generated from a busy offseason that included the Kevin Durant trade, but it is a significant blow.

4. New York Knicks

Expectations are sky-high for the Knicks, who have rounded out their roster and may depend more on their bench with new coach Mike Brown coming in.

5. Cleveland Cavaliers

Lonzo Ball and Larry Nance Jr. are solid additions, but the Cavaliers will need to stay healthy — and will need their stars like Donovan Mitchell and Evan Mobley to take another step forward.

6. Los Angeles Clippers

This is very much a win-now roster, but with an inquiry surrounding Kawhi Leonard and owner Steve Ballmer about possible salary cap circumvention, can L.A. focus on basketball?

7. Minnesota Timberwolves

Could an MVP-caliber season be incoming for Anthony Edwards? He spoke at media day on Monday, Sept. 29 and vowed to be fully engaged, even against weaker opponents.

8. Los Angeles Lakers

The vibes were high at media day, with LeBron James and a slimmed-down Luka Dončić seemingly focused on elevating the Lakers into a legitimate contender. They still need some depth in the frontcourt, and a lot will ride on DeAndre Ayton.

9. Boston Celtics

Videos of Jayson Tatum hitting the court just five months after his Achilles rupture have Boston faithful optimistic that a return could be in the cards later this year. But would Boston be better served to retool for next season?

10. Detroit Pistons

Not many people are talking about the Pistons, who are a threat to become powers in an Eastern Conference that is wide open. With Jaden Ivey returning, Cade Cunningham will not need to be on the ball as much. Might that slow Detroit's offense?

11. Golden State Warriors

Golden State would do well to have a long-term plan for Jonathan Kuminga, because it's becoming apparent that if he signs his qualifying offer, there's a massive risk that he'll be gone at the end of the season, with the Warriors getting nothing in return. And with an aging roster, a scoring presence like Kuminga could go a long way.

12. Indiana Pacers

Coach Rick Carlisle said Tyrese Haliburton's Achilles injury would be an opportunity for young players to step up. Look for Andrew Nembhard and Bennedict Mathurin to try to fill that void.

13. Orlando Magic

The Magic should return a stingy defense that swarms opponents along the perimeter. As long as they stay healthy, and as long as Desmond Bane helps solve their 3-point shooting woes, they could break out.

14. San Antonio Spurs

Coach Mitch Johnson said Monday that Victor Wembanyama has no restrictions. That's incredible news for San Antonio, which has a stellar core of playmakers in De'Aaron Fox and Stephon Castle, who should ease things considerably for Wemby.

15. Memphis Grizzlies

Can they get a healthy Ja Morant? He remains one of the most explosive, dynamic players, and one who can ignite.

16. Milwaukee Bucks

There's a weird vibe hanging around the Bucks. Giannis Antetokounmpo essentially confirmed that he was considering his options over the summer and he's not necessarily giving the Bucks a vote of confidence. If the wheels fall off, this could get messy.

17. Atlanta Hawks

Adding Kristaps Porziņģis, Nickeil Alexander-Walker and Luke Kennard was massive, but the continued progression of Jalen Johnson would be the thing that gets Atlanta closer to becoming a legitimate competitor.

18. Dallas Mavericks

Coach Jason Kidd tempered expectations Monday that Kyrie Irving would be able to return soon from his torn ACL. It's tough to see the Mavs being legitimate threats in a crowded West without him.

19. Chicago Bulls

They locked up Josh Giddey and took care of him in the long-term. But this is a roster that still needs an infusion of star talent.

20. Philadelphia 76ers

Joel Embiid was slimmed down at media day, but he made it clear that he would be limited to start training camp and would likely need load management throughout the season. The Sixers could be dangerous, but they'll need him on the floor.

21. Miami Heat

Losing Tyler Herro for the first two months of the season, potentially, comes as a significant blow to a team that struggled to score — especially late in games — even when he was on the floor.

22. Toronto Raptors

This team will go as far as Brandon Ingram and Scottie Barnes take them.

23. Sacramento Kings

Domantas Sabonis has made it clear he wishes he had a star point guard to play off of. It's almost like they could use a guy ... like De'Aaron Fox.

24. Phoenix Suns

Trading away Kevin Durant leaves Devin Booker as the unquestioned No. 1 option. He said during media day that he would use his voice as a leader. His biggest project should be getting fellow guard Jalen Green to play without hesitstion.

25. Washington Wizards

They're still a couple of years away from competing, but Washington does have a nice collection of players, starting with their French connection in Alex Sarr and Bilal Coulibaly.

26. Portland Trail Blazers

With Damian Lillard (Achilles) and Scoot Henderson (hamstring) each missing extended time, Portland could have an unsettled start to the season. Rookie big Yang Hansen could be an intriguing player to watch early on.

27. New Orleans Pelicans

Zion Williamson showed up rather slimmed down and appears to be in the best shape of his NBA career. It's a great sign, as the Pelicans will need him to be on the floor.

28. Brooklyn Nets

The Nets, who might be forced to play their rookies — they drafted five in the first round alone — could be in for a long season.

29. Charlotte Hornets

The Hornets quietly had a decent offseason and have more shooting. There will probably still be a steep learning curve, however.

30. Utah Jazz

The Jazz might be a team that continues to build for the future and sells ahead of the February trading deadline.

Smoke rises during an Israeli military operation in Gaza City

BRUSSELS/ANKARA/BERLIN (Reuters) -U.S. President Donald Trump's 20-point plan to end nearly two years of war in Gaza has received the backing of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, while the plan has been shared with Palestinian militant group Hamas.

Here are some reactions to the peace proposal.

"I support your plan to end the war in Gaza, which achieves our war aims.

It will bring back to Israel all our hostages, dismantle Hamas' military capabilities, end its political rule, and ensure that Gaza never again poses a threat to Israel."

"The State of Palestine welcomes the sincere and determined efforts of President Donald J. Trump to end the war on Gaza and affirms its confidence in his ability to find a path toward peace."

"It is a historic missed opportunity ... and in my estimation it will end in tears. Our children will be forced to fight in Gaza again.

We will consult, consider and decide, God willing. But the celebrations since yesterday are simply absurd."

ZIAD AL-NAKHALA, HEAD OF GAZA-BASED MILITANT GROUP ISLAMIC JIHAD

"Israel is trying to impose through the United States what it could not achieve through war. Therefore, we consider the American-Israeli declaration a recipe for blowing up the region."

"President Trump's Gaza plan is an opportunity for lasting peace. It offers the best immediate chance to end the war. The EU is ready to help it succeed. Israel has signed on to the plan. Hamas must now accept it without delay, starting with the immediate release of hostages."

JOINT STATEMENT BY FOREIGN MINISTERS OF UAE, SAUDI ARABIA, QATAR, EGYPT, JORDAN, INDONESIA, PAKISTAN, TURKEY

"The ministers affirm their readiness to engage positively and constructively with the United States and the parties toward finalising the agreement and ensuring its implementation, in a manner that ensures peace, security, and stability for the peoples of the region.

They reaffirm their joint commitment to work with the United States to end the war in Gaza through a comprehensive deal that ensures unrestricted delivery of sufficient humanitarian aid to Gaza, no displacement of the Palestinians, the release of hostages, a security mechanism that guarantees the security of all sides, full Israeli withdrawal, rebuilds Gaza and creates a path for just peace on the basis of the two-state solution, under which Gaza is fully integrated with the West Bank in a Palestinian state."

UN SPOKESPERSON IN GENEVA, ALESSANDRA VELLUCCI

"We are also continuing to be in touch with the parties, with the various parties, about the peace efforts. For indeed, we welcome all the mediation efforts. And of course, we stand ready to support any peace plan with everything we can do, including the provision of humanitarian assistance."

"I commend US President Donald Trump's efforts and leadership aimed at halting the bloodshed in Gaza and achieving a ceasefire. Türkiye will continue to contribute to the process with a view to establishing a just and lasting peace acceptable to all parties."

"Russia always supports and welcomes any efforts by Trump aimed at ending the tragedy that is currently unfolding.

And, of course, we want this plan to be implemented and for it to help bring events in the Middle East to a peaceful conclusion."

"We welcome the peace plan for Gaza presented yesterday by President Trump. This plan is the best plan to end the war.

The fact that Israel supports this plan is a significant step forward. Now Hamas must agree and clear the way for peace."

"I welcome President @realDonaldTrump's commitment to ending the war in Gaza and securing the release of all hostages.

I expect Israel to engage resolutely on this basis. Hamas has no choice but to immediately release all hostages and follow this plan. These elements must pave the way for in-depth discussions with all relevant partners to build a lasting peace in the region, based on the two-state solution and on the principles endorsed by 142 UN member states, at the initiative of France and Saudi Arabia."

"The new U.S. initiative to deliver an end to the war in Gaza is profoundly welcome and I am grateful for President Trump's leadership.

We strongly support his efforts to end the fighting, release the hostages and ensure the provision of urgent humanitarian assistance for the people of Gaza. This is our top priority and should happen immediately."

"Spain welcomes the US-backed peace proposal for Gaza.

We must put an end to so much suffering.

It is time for the violence to cease, for all hostages to be released immediately and for humanitarian aid to be allowed access to the civilian population.

The two-state solution, with Israel and Palestine living side by side in peace and security, is the only possible solution."

Thousands of protesters took to the streets of Buenos Aires this weekend to demand justice for two young women and a teen girl whose torture and murders were livestreamed on social media, in a case that has shocked Argentina. Seven people have been arrested in the case, police said Monday.

The victims' relatives held a banner with their names — "Lara, Brenda, Morena" — and placards with their images, flanked by supporters as they marched to Parliament.

"It was a narco-feminicide!" "Our lives are not disposable!" read signs and banners as protesters banged on drums at the march, organized by a feminist group.

The bodies of Morena Verdi and Brenda del Castillo, cousins aged 20, and 15-year-old Lara Gutierrez were found buried Wednesday in the yard of a house in a southern suburb of Buenos Aires, five days after they went missing.

The crime, which investigators tied to drug gangs, was perpetrated live on Instagram and watched by 45 members of a private account, officials said.

"Bloodthirsty" killers

"Women must be protected more than ever," Brenda's father, Leonel del Castillo, told reporters at the protest. He had earlier said he had not been able to identify his daughter's body due to the abuse she had endured.

Antonio del Castillo, grandfather of the slain 20-year-old cousins, was in tears, calling the killers "bloodthirsty."

"You wouldn't do what they did to them to an animal," he said.

"I have hope that the truth will be revealed," he added. "I ask people to stand with us."

On Monday, police announced the arrest of a seventh suspect following an interview she gave to a local television station. Earlier, three men and two women were arrested, followed by a sixth suspect on Saturday.

According to authorities, the man suspected of ordering the massacre is a 20-year-old Peruvian drug trafficker nicknamed "Little J," who was active an in impoverished southern suburb of Buenos Aires. An international arrest warrant has been issued for him. His alleged lieutenant, aged 23, is also being sought.

"What happens to those who steal drugs from me"

Investigators said the victims, thinking they were going to a party, were lured into a van on Sept. 19 allegedly as part of a plan to "punish" them for violating gang code and serving as a warning to others.

Police discovered the video after one of the detainees revealed it under questioning, according to Javier Alonso, security minister for Buenos Aires province.

In the footage, a gang leader is heard saying: "This is what happens to those who steal drugs from me."

Argentine media reported the torturers cut off fingers, pulled out nails, beat and suffocated the victims.

Meta, the parent company of Instagram, disputed that the livestream occurred on its platform.

"We have not found any evidence of the livestream taking place on Instagram. Our team continues to cooperate with law enforcement as they investigate this horrific crime," a spokesperson told the Agence France-Presse.

Federico Celebon, a cousin of Brenda and Morena, told AFP the young women had sometimes engaged in sex work "to survive," without their families' knowledge.

They had "bad luck" to "find themselves at the wrong time with the wrong people," he said.

According to several media outlets, the women had been asked to attend the party as prostitutes.

Yamila Alegre, a 35-year-old leatherworker at the march on Saturday, blasted media coverage of the case.

"We always try to make the girls feel guilty, we know everything about their lives, what they were doing there, what their family is like. ... We publish their photos, but we know nothing about the perpetrators, not their names, their faces are blurred," she said.

Paula Fabero, Brenda del Castillo's mother, reacts as relatives and friends of Brenda del Castillo, Morena Verdi and Lara Gutierrez march with abortion rights activists to mark the International Safe Abortion Day and call for justice after the three young women were tortured and murdered earlier this week in a suspected drug gang revenge attack, according to local media, in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Sept. 27, 2025. / Credit: Cristina Sille / REUTERS

Del Valle Galvan, Lara's aunt, denied that the 15-year-old was involved with drugs or prostitution.

"There is poverty in our neighborhood, but what people say about Lara is false," she said.

"We want justice to be done, for nothing to be covered up, for the whole truth to come out so that those responsible can be held accountable for their actions. We are not afraid!" she told AFP.

Femicide epidemic

The European Institute for Gender Equality says femicide "is deeply rooted in and a manifestation of power imbalances in society, which promotes an unequal status for men and women."

The institute says femicide "is broadly defined as the killing of a woman or girl because of her gender and can take different forms, such as the murder of women as a result of intimate partner violence; the torture and misogynist slaying of women; killing of women and girls in the name of 'honor,' etc."

One woman is killed by a man every 36 hours in Argentina, according to a femicide monitoring group in the country, BBC News reported.

Femicide was added to Argentina's penal code as an aggravating factor of homicides in 2012, and is punishable with life imprisonment, according to the Guardian.

However, earlier this year, Argentine President Javier Milei said he wanted to remove the concept of "femicide" from the country's penal code, the Council on Foreign Relations reported. Milei had argued that femicide promotes the idea that "the life of a woman is worth more than that of a man."
