Will Lakers blow 3-0 NBA playoff lead? Pressure's on LA after another loss

LOS ANGELES — TheLos Angeles Lakersconsistently turned the ball over as theHouston Rocketsearned a 99-93 victory in Game 5of the Western Conference first-round series on Wednesday, April 29.

USA TODAY Sports

Now the series might be turning in the Rockets’ favor after winning two straight games and closing the gap after the Lakers built a 3-0 lead to start the series.

As a former player, Lakers coach JJ Redick understands how turnovers can happen throughout the game, but he recognized how they impacted his team’s overall performance.

“It's hard because the players see stuff on the court and it's easy for us to look back on film or armchair quarterback it,” Redick said. “I do think we had two of those turnovers where we get a stop and we throw the ball ahead out of bounds. Those are the kind of ones that you wish you had back.

“But the turnovers, they come in all shapes and sizes and it's about limiting them and you certainly have to give your guys freedom to make basketball plays. I would say in general, though, turnovers of aggression are okay. Turnovers of passivity are not.”

Marcus Smart was responsible for the Lakers’ early start offensively, providing eight of the team’s first 10 points, but it was the guard being responsible for six of the team’s 15 total turnovers that was glaring on the stat sheet.

“I had six turnovers, and that’s unacceptable for me,” Smart said after the game. “Especially with only two assists, especially against this team.”

The Rockets would score 18 points off turnovers. Houston trailed by as many as 11 points in the first half against Los Angeles before closing the gap and outscoring the Lakers 30-19 in the second quarter.

The Rockets took a 51-47 lead into the locker room at halftime.

The Lakers stumbled in the second half, allowing for the Rockets to build up a 13-point lead.

LeBron James tried to rally the Lakers in the final minutes of regulation but it was the team’s ongoing struggles that continued to make the difference.

Rui Hachimura nailed a 3-pointer that helped the Lakers try and gather some momentum as the crowd began to get loud, but Hachimura was called for a foul down on the other end of the court.

The cheers from the Los Angeles crowd quickly turned to boos as Tari Eason was at the free-throw line for the Rockets. He misses the first but makes the second.

The Rockets would lead the Lakers 88-81 with 4:13 left in regulation.

Houston overcame a late surge by the Lakers, with what was an 11-1 scoring run after, with four quick points by Reed Shepard.

“Reed Sheppard made a pull-up jumper to put them up five,” James said. “We come down, I turn the ball over, put them up seven. They’re just bang-bang plays.”

Austin Reaves returnsfrom injury

In the loss, Austin Reaves' return was one of the only bright spots for the Lakers on Wednesday.

Reaves had 22 points and six assists off the bench after returning from a nine-game absence. He was sidelined with a left oblique muscle strain injury.

Reaves remained grateful about returning to the court, having even counted down the days in which he wasn’t able to participate.

While he did express how happy he was to return to the court, Reaves was not shy about critiquing his process toward returning for the Lakers.

“I wish I could get a little bit more of a rhythm before jumping into the fire like that, but I had a lot of fun out there,” Reaves said.

Will the Lakers clinch the series?

History is still on the Lakers’ side.

Teams with LeBron James on the roster have won 24 consecutive series when taking a 2-0 lead, according to ESPN.

When do Lakers play next?

The Lakers will travel to Houston for Game 6 of the series. The game is set for Friday, May 1, at 6:30 p.m. PT (9:30 p.m. ET). The game will be streamed on Prime.

Mets place OF Luis Robert Jr. on IL

New York Mets outfielder Luis Robert Jr. could be facing an extended stint on the injured list with a lumbar spine disc herniation.

Field Level Media

The Mets placed Robert on the 10-day injured list on Thursday after an MRI exam revealed the extent of the issue that crept up Sunday. He missed the last three games and officially was moved to the injured list prior to Thursday's game against the Washington Nationals.

Infielder Eric Wagaman was recalled from Triple-A Syracuse to replace him on the active roster.

Robert, 28, is hitting .224 with a .656 OPS after a hot start to his first season in New York. The Mets acquired Robert from the Chicago White Sox in an offseason trade.

Five of his 19 hits and five of his eight RBIs this season came in the opening series against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

The move is retroactive to April 27, meaning Robert could be activated as soon as May 6 if his injury responds quickly.

Injuries have hit the Mets hard in the first month-plus of the regular season. They entered Thursday with an MLB-worst 10-20 record and were 3-16 in the past 19 games.

Juan Soto (calf) returned from the IL on April 22 after missing 15 games, but Francisco Lindor (hamstring) was hurt in the same game on the bases and isn't expected to be evaluated for at least two more weeks. Starting pitcher Kodai Senga landed on the IL on Tuesday with back inflammation and two other position players -- Jorge Polanco and Jared Young -- are also out with injuries.

Tyrese Maxey, Sixers dump Celtics again, send series to Game 7

Tyrese Maxey scored 30 points Thursday as the surging Philadelphia 76ers posted a 106-93 win over the visiting Boston Celtics, forcing a decisive Game 7 in their first-round Eastern Conference playoff series.

Field Level Media

The second-seeded Celtics led the series 3-1 following a 32-point win in Philadelphia on Sunday, but the seventh-seeded Sixers rebounded to post double-digit wins in Games 5 and 6.

The teams will reconvene Saturday for Game 7 in Boston, where the Sixers will aim to complete a 3-1 series comeback for the first time in franchise history.

Paul George added 23 points for Philadelphia, while Joel Embiid had 19 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists in his third game since returning from an emergency appendectomy. VJ Edgecombe and Kelly Oubre Jr. chipped in with 14 points apiece for the Sixers.

"I just thought we played free," George said. "It's really no pressure. We come out -- we lose, we go home."

"It's (still) win-or-go-home. I like our chances," George said about Game 7. "I know it ain't going to be easy, but we've been playing well lately."

Jaylen Brown led Boston with 18 points but also committed five of his team's 13 turnovers. Jayson Tatum contributed 17 points and 11 rebounds for the Celtics, who shot poorly from the field (41.9%), the 3-point arc (12 of 41, 29.3%) and the foul line (9 of 16, 56.2%).

Philadelphia shot just 8 of 24 (33.3%) from the field in the first quarter and trailed 23-20 after 12 minutes.

The second quarter was a different story for the Sixers, who outscored the Celtics 38-26 in the period. Maxey led the way with 13 points in the session.

Philadelphia's lead was 38-36 midway through the second quarter before Edgecombe's jumper ignited an 18-8 run that put the hosts ahead by a dozen late in the period. Boston briefly got its deficit down to seven before Maxey dropped in a floater just before halftime.

About three minutes into the third quarter, Brown knocked down a 3-pointer to bring Boston within 65-54. However, Philadelphia countered with a flashy sequence in which Embiid's behind-the-back pass set up an Oubre dunk and then George's behind-the-back pass unleashed an Edgecombe slam to bring the crowd to its feet.

The Sixers went on to lead by as many as 21 points late in the third quarter before the Celtics inched within 82-63 heading into the fourth.

Philadelphia was up 88-65 with 10:24 remaining, but Boston then scored 11 straight points, capped by Luka Garza's dunk with 7:10 to play.

However, it didn't take the Sixers long to regain control. Edgecombe swished a 3-pointer to make it 98-78 and the home team cruised from there.

"It's part of the playoffs. We have an opportunity for Game 7 at home," Celtics coach Joe Mazzulla said. "We didn't play well tonight. We've got to move on to the next game."
