A military commander has discussed shifting some California National Guard troops away from the Trump administration's weekslong deployment to deal with protests in Los Angeles so they can help fight wildfires, two U.S. officials told CBS News.

Gen. Gregory Guillot, the leader of U.S. Northern Command, made the request to Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, proposing that 200 out of roughly 4,000 California National Guard members be returned to wildfire duty in California.

The request to shift some troops to wildfire duty was first reported by The .

The purpose of the possible move is to help prepare for wildfire season, one U.S. official said. The other official said the 200 Guard members could be returned to the California National Guard and placed on standby to respond to wildfires.

Wildfires can happen at any time of year in California, but they usually peak in the summer and fall. The state expects an "early and active season" this year, with above-average activity in July and August, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, or Cal Fire.

The Los Angeles deployment has been controversial and subject to legal challenges. President Trump called up around 4,000 Guard members — and deployed around 700 Marines — over California Gov. Gavin Newsom's objections, moves Mr. Trump argued were necessary to protect federal buildings and immigration agents from chaotic protests against Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Newsom argued the deployment was illegal and unnecessary.

When Mr. Trump initially called up the California National Guard to deal with protests, the state had warned the move could interfere with its wildfire response. Guard forces often work alongside Cal Fire crews — and as wildfires become more frequent and severe, state officials have said more resources are needed. Newsom's office said last week the Guard's firefighting force was only at 40% capacity due to the Los Angeles deployment.

"This deployment comes when California is in the midst of peak wildfire season for both Northern and Southern California and may need to rely on their crucial support," the state of California wrote in a lawsuit against the Trump administration over the deployment.

A federal district court judge initially sided with the state in its lawsuit, but a panel of appellate court judges paused that ruling, allowing Mr. Trump to maintain control of the Guard.

The troops were shifted to federal service earlier this month under a law known as Title 10, which lets the president call up National Guard forces during a "rebellion" or if "the president is unable with the regular forces to execute the laws of the United States." The Trump administration argued those conditions were met due to threats of violence against immigration agents who carried out arrests in the Los Angeles area.

Newsom objected to the move, and the state quickly filed a lawsuit calling it a "power grab." The state argued that under the law cited by the administration, Mr. Trump does not have the legal authority to call up the Guard without permission from the governor.

A three-judge panel from the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit ultimately sided with the Trump administration, allowing troops to remain in Los Angeles while the state's lawsuit is heard. The court wrote that Mr. Trump most likely "lawfully exercised his statutory authority" to federalize the Guard, and that the law "does not give governors any veto power."

Vegas Golden Knights acquire Mitch Marner, will sign top NHL free agent

 • Vegas Golden Knights acquire Mitch Marner, will sign top NHL free agent

Mike Brehm, USA TODAY June 30, 2025 at 7:01 PM

Mitch Marner, the NHL's top 2025 unrestricted free agent, is off the list after being traded to the Vegas Golden Knights and agreeing to an eight-year, $96 million contract a day before free agency opens, according to multiple reports.

The Toronto Maple Leafs will receive center Nicolas Roy in the June 30 trade, giving them a return for a player they could have lost for nothing.

Last year, the Carolina Hurricanes received only a third-round pick for Jake Guentzel when they traded his rights to the Tampa Bay Lightning before free agency opened.

Marner had 102 points this past season, fifth best in the league and eight more than Jack Eichel, the Golden Knights' leading scorer in 2024-25. At a $12 million average, Marner will be the Golden Knights' top-paid player, though Eichel ($10 million cap hit) is in the final year of his contract and is eligible to sign an extension.

The Golden Knights had to move players to make the money work. Roy ($3 million) had 31 points for Vegas and has two years left on his deal.

The team also traded defenseman Nicolas Hague to the Predators for forward Colton Sissons (Nashville retained half his salary) and defenseman Jeremy Lauzon. Hague signed a four-year, $22 million contact with Nashville.

Marner ranks fifth in Maple Leafs history with 741 points in the regular season.

The Maple Leafs also received forward Matias Maccelli in a trade with the Utah Mammoth on June 30.

Alex Pietrangelo injury update

Though the Golden Knights are adding Marner, they will be without defenseman Alex Pietrangelo, one of the top acquisitions in franchise history. Pietrangelo and general manager Kelly McCrimmon put out statements on the defenseman's health.

Said Pietrangelo: "The past few years have been very challenging on my physical well-being, and I am in a difficult position with my overall playing health. After exploring options with doctors as well as my family, it's been advised to remove the intensity of hockey to see if my body can improve so that I can return to a normal quality of life. This decision has been difficult to come to terms with after the last 17 years of competition and the camaraderie with my teammates and coaches. The likelihood is low that my body will recover to the standard required to play, but I know this is the right decision for me and my family."

Said McCrimmon: "Alex has our organization's full support in prioritizing his long-term health and quality of life. Alex is dealing with hips that would require bilateral femur reconstruction, with no guarantee of success. Throughout the season, the steps that Alex needed to take to be able to play and practice began to grow and take a significant toll on his body. Our hope in February during the NHL's break for the 4 Nations Face-Off was to give Alex treatment and rest to help provide relief, but instead, what we found were diminished positive results and a process that is no longer sustainable moving forward.

"Alex has given everything to the game and to the Golden Knights and has played through significant challenges in the pursuit of trying to win another Stanley Cup in Vegas. He is one of the most respected players in the league, not only for his elite talent but for his character, leadership, competitiveness, and professionalism. Today's decision is a difficult one for both Alex and the Golden Knights, but it is being made for the right reasons – so that Alex can be the family man we all know him to be."

July 1, 2025 at 4:17 AM

WARSAW (Reuters) -A Canadian teenager sentenced in Poland last year to 20 months in prison for spying for Russia could be released early under certain conditions, a Polish court said on Tuesday.

A statement by the court did not give details of the possible conditional release.

Europe is in a heightened state of alert over what security agencies across the continent call Russia's "hybrid war" of sabotage and espionage - accusations which the Kremlin has repeatedly denied.

Laken Pavan, who turned 18 a few weeks after his arrest, pleaded guilty to charges of helping Russian intelligence and was sentenced in December 2024. He is due to leave prison in January 2026.

On April 16, 2024 Pavan flew from Vancouver to Moscow via Istanbul and joined a volunteer group in the Russian-occupied eastern Ukrainian region of Donetsk, according to Polish court documents seen by Reuters.

The organisation's social media account said it was set up in 2014 to recruit mercenaries to fight for Russia in Donetsk and the neighbouring Ukrainian region of Luhansk and to organise humanitarian projects for civilians.

Pavan told Polish investigators that in late April 2024 he was arrested in Donetsk and questioned by men who said they were from Russia's Federal Security Service, according to the court documents.

After several days of detention, Pavan said, he was instructed to return to Europe, lose his passport to conceal his trip to Russia and begin working for the FSB, the documents showed.

He told Polish prosecutors he flew to Copenhagen, but later decided to move to Warsaw as life in Denmark was too expensive.

A couple of days after checking into a Warsaw budget hotel, Pavan said, he asked a receptionist to call police. When they arrived, he confessed to working with the FSB and planning to pass information about Poland's military to his Russian handler, the court documents showed.

BOSTON (AP) — Cincinnati Reds phenom Chase Burns went from a memorable major league debut to a miserable second start against the Boston Red Sox on Monday night.

After becoming the first starting pitcher in the expansion era to strike out the first five big league hitters he faced Tuesday against the New York Yankees, the 22-year-old righty was tagged for seven runs, five earned, and got only one out as the Red Sox beat the Reds 13-6.

Trevor Story hit a three-run homer in the first inning as Boston collected five hits and had two walks against the righty.

"I hope it doesn't get in the way of his next start," Reds manager Terry Francona said. "That's tough. Tough on him, tough on us. A lot of people were putting their arm around him. He's a good kid. It'll be real interesting to see his next start."

Burns, selected second overall by the Reds in July's amateur draft, walked the leadoff batter, Jarren Duran, on a 99.9 mph fastball.

"Just trying to flush it and go back to the drawing board, see what works and what didn't work and go from there," Burns said.

Francona was asked if he may have been tipping his pitches.

"That's something that you always probably need to check," he said. "He threw some pitches that caught a lot of the plate and they were definitely looking (fastball) and those are always things we try to check for."

Francona went on to say that one of his former players — Red Sox manager Alex Cora — is good at picking things up.

"Cora is one of the best at that,'' he said. "They were certainly ready, they were coming out hacking and they were squaring it up pretty good."

Burns didn't know if that could have been part of his problem despite throwing a fastball near 100 mph with a hard slider in the upper 80s.

"I don't know. They put a lot of good swings on a lot of good pitches, a lot of mistakes out there," he said. "Couldn't really tell you."

His defense also let him down when Roman Anthony hit a grounder that second baseman Matt McLain threw into short left field, attempting to get a force.

Abraham Toro lined a single to left for the first run and Carlos Narváez followed by hitting the next pitch for an RBI double off the Green Monster. After a ground out, Story belted a 1-1 slider into the center-field bleachers, making it 5-0.

Story took some extra BP on the field about 3 ½ hours before the game, hitting fastballs. It may have been part of Boston's plan.

"He's got electric stuff," he said. "I think we as an offense, we had a really good plan, and we were very convicted. We practiced the execution all day, and the execution really came out today during the game."

David Hamilton added an RBI single and Francona lifted Burns after his second walk.

Anthony added an RBI single against Brent Suter, completing Burns' pitching line.

PARIS (AP) — France and the rest of Europe were still in the grips of the first major heat wave this summer with health warnings in effect Tuesday, even as conditions began to improve in some parts of the region.

Punishing temperatures were forecast to reach 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit) in Paris and to stay unusually high in Belgium and the Netherlands. In contrast, temperatures were falling in Portugal, where no red heat warnings were issued.

In France, the national weather agency Météo-France placed several departments under the highest red alert, with the Paris region particularly hard hit. The heat wave — defined as consecutive days of very high temperature — is expected to intensify Tuesday and more than 1,300 schools were expected to be partially or fully closed, the Education Ministry said.

Visitors to the Eiffel Tower without tickets were told to postpone their visits, and the summit of the city's landmark was closed until Thursday.

Farther south, 17 of Italy's 27 major cities were experiencing a heat wave, according to the Health Ministry.

Météo-France also warned of the heightened risk of wildfires due to the drought-stricken soil, compounded by a lack of rain in June and the recent surge in temperature.

Climate experts warn that future summers are likely to be hotter than any recorded to date. By 2100, France could be up to 4 C (39 F) warmer, with temperatures exceeding 40 C expected every year and extreme heat spikes potentially reaching 50 C (122 F). According to Météo-France, the country may face a tenfold increase in the number of heat wave days by 2100.

In Portugal, Lisbon was forecast to reach 33 C (91 F), typical for this time of the year, though some inland areas could still see peaks of 43 C (109 F), according to the national weather agency. June temperature records were broken in two locations in Portugal on June 29.

___

writers Barry Hatton in Lisbon, Portugal, and David Billier contributed to this report.
