Surprisingly, the costume appeared to include a large Mickey Mouse head paired with just a thin costume on the lower half of their body

Disney fans are raising their eyebrows after getting a glimpse of what some of the beloved characters looked like in the 1950s.

Recently, an X user named Alea, whose bio states that they are the "unofficial Disneyland fan club president," took to the social media platform to share a photo of Mickey Mouse from nearly 70 years ago.

"Thinking about character dining in the late 50s," they captioned the photo of a person wearing a Mickey Mouse mascot head and just a thin costume on the lower half of their body.

The photo was seemingly taken at the Press Picnic for Nature's Wonderland in Disneyland two decades before the amusement park officially began character dining in the '70s — a sit-down meal where characters interact with guests at their tables.

Still, fellow social media users responded in shock, with one joking that Mickey's "proportions [are] just a tad off." Others expressed more blunt assessments of the costume, calling it "terrifying."

"Mickey went on a diet," another person jokingly added.

The X user followed up their original post with a few photos of character costumes from the 1930s, writing, "If it's any consolation, these were some of the original Mickey and Minnie Mouse costume designs in the '30s... very grateful they went in a different direction."

X users also expressed their takes on those costumes, with one writing, "This would've been ... an experience for sure lol."

Others said the costumes were "hilarious."

According to WDW Magazine, Mickey Mouse's costume has evolved a lot since the character was first created in 1928. The original costume consisted of a mask, a black leotard, shorts and gloves.

Since then, key changes to the costume have included the introduction of a more rounded, less cartoonish head — one that later evolved to allow for blinking and mouth movement.

Over time, Mickey added his now-iconic red shorts, yellow shoes and white gloves, sometimes even adding a jacket when the occasion permits.
