KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — A strong earthquake in eastern Afghanistan near the Pakistan border has killed at least 250 people and injured at least 500 others, officials said.

The quake late Sunday hit a series of towns in the province of Kunar, near the city of Jalalabad in neighboring Nangahar province. The 6.0 magnitude at 11:47 p.m. was centered 27 kilometers (17 miles) east-northeast of the city of Jalalabad in Nangarhar province, the U.S. Geological Survey said. It was just 8 kilometers (5 miles) deep. Shallower quakes tend to cause more damage.

The Kunar Disaster Management Authority said in a statement that at least 250 people were killed and 500 others injured in the districts of Nur Gul, Soki, Watpur, Manogi and Chapadare.

Jalalabad is a bustling trade city due to its proximity with neighboring Pakistan and a key border crossing between the countries. Although it has a population of about 300,000 according to the municipality, it's metropolitan area is thought to be far larger. Most of its buildings are low-rise constructions, mostly of concrete and brick, and its outlying areas include homes built of mud bricks and wood. Many are of poor construction.

Jalalabad also has considerable agriculture and farming, including citrus fruit and rice, with the Kabul River flowing through the city.

A magnitude 6.3 earthquake struck Afghanistan on Oct. 7, 2023, followed by strong aftershocks. The Taliban government estimated at least 4,000 people perished.

The U.N. gave a far lower death toll of about 1,500. It was the deadliest natural disaster to strike Afghanistan in recent memory.

Alex Roldan converted from the penalty spot late in the second half and had an assist during the first half, and the host Seattle Sounders defeated Lionel Messi and Inter Miami 3-0 to win the 2025 Leagues Cup final on Sunday night.

The match was marred by a melee at the final whistle involving multiple players from both teams. Miami striker Luis Suarez appeared to be one of the players at the middle of it, and video cameras appeared to capture him spitting at a member of Seattle's staff postgame as the melee died down.

The Leagues Cup is a tournament held jointly by MLS and Liga MX with Concacaf sanctioning, and thus has a disciplinary committee independent from both leagues or the continental federation. Presumably, it would be responsible for deciding any discipline from the incident, though potentially MLS could also get involved.

Roldan set up Osaze De Rosario's fourth goal of the tournament for the opener for Seattle, which won its second Concacaf honor and ninth all-time major trophy since beginning MLS play in 2009.

It's the Sounders' first since they defeated Mexico's Pumas UNAM over two legs to win the 2022 Concacaf Champions League, ending a run of 16 consecutive Mexican champions in that event.

Paul Rothrock scored the third in the final moments of a win that guaranteed Seattle a first-round bye into the Round of 16 at the 2026 Concacaf Champions Cup.

Miami failed to secure its third major trophy since Messi's arrival during the summer of the 2023 season and its second Leagues Cup title after winning the 2023 event.

The Herons are still guaranteed a Concacaf spot next year, but they will start in the first round unless they win the 2025 MLS Cup.

Seattle was dominant during the first half and went deservingly in front in the 26th minute.

Jesus Ferreira played the initial ball out wide to Roldan on the right, and Roldan curled in an outswinging cross to the far post, where De Rosario met it with a decisive header.

Miami wasted two excellent chances to level early in the second half, with Suarez providing the link-up play.

In the 50th minute, it was Messi arriving just above the 6-yard box to Suarez's spinning, cutback pass but firing over goalkeeper Andrew Thomas and the crossbar on the run.

Then in the 60th minute, Tadeo Allende was on the end of Suarez's clever backheel but sent his 1-on-1 opportunity wide of the right post as Thomas charged off his line.

That proved costly when Sounders substitute Georgi Minoungou got free down the left in the 82nd minute. With Yannick Bright tracking back to defend, Minoungou attempted a cutback and was caught by Bright's sliding challenge.

Roldan cooly converted the penalty past Oscar Ustari in the 84th minute to turn tension into joy for most of a crowd of 69,314 at Lumen Field -- a Leagues Cup and club single-game attendance record.

'90s nostalgia? Zoë Kravitz says bring it on. But the casual homophobia laced throughout so much media from the decade? Keep it.

The star of Big Little Lies confessed her new film, Caught Stealing, kindles a powerful yearning for some aspects of the era.

"[I'm] really nostalgic for that time," Kravitz recently told PEOPLE. "Then also the fashion, all that stuff's so cool. New York City and the grunge."

But there's one thing she'd never ditch the 2020s for: "Super homophobic jokes on mainstream television. If you watch Friends now you're like, 'Whoa.'"

Kravitz's costar in Darren Aronofsky's comic crime caper, Austin Butler, responded to Kravitz's reservation with shock, asking, "Wow, even in Friends?"

Kravitz replied, "Oh, so much in Friends. Like, things that aren't punchlines are punchlines. It's wild. So maybe that? We can keep that there."

The placid sitcom centered on the lives of six young adults living in New York City seems the platonic ideal of an unproblematic fave, having been syndicated and streamed continually by millions since it left the air over 20 years ago. But Friends' queer fan base would have no trouble telling you exactly how regressive the series could be.

Two of the main storylines that make Friends a particularly hard rewatch, where LGBTQ rights are concerned, are the relationship between Carol (Jane Sibbett), Ross' (David Schwimmer) ex-wife and her longtime girlfriend Susan (Jessica Hecht), and Chandler's (Matthew Perry) trans parent.

The episodes featuring Carol and Susan, particularly the season 2 episode "The One With the Lesbian Wedding," are rife with jokes at the queer couple's expense, and many in the cast and crew have expressed retroactive regret for how derisively Chandler's parent was written and treated.

"We kept referring to her as Chandler's father, even though Chandler's father was trans," Friends creator Marta Kauffman noted in 2022. "Pronouns were not yet something that I understood... So we didn't refer to that character as she. That was a mistake." In 2018, the actress who played the character, Kathleen Turner, declared, "The show hasn't aged well."

Dwayne Johnson takes a serious turn as UFC fighter Mark Kerr in "The Smashing Machine," which has its world premiere Monday at the Venice Film Festival.

Reviews aren't out yet, but the actor is already sparking Oscar buzz for his transformation in the film from Benny Safdie. The festival has launched several recent best actor Oscar winners, from Brendan Fraser in "The Whale" to Adrien Brody in "The Brutalist." Like both of those films, "The Smashing Machine" is being released by A24.

Venice's artistic director Alberto Barbera said he wouldn't be surprised to see Johnson, who he called "absolutely amazing" in the film, and Emily Blunt, who plays Kerr's wife, among the Oscar nominees next year.

"When I saw the first images in last January, I thought it could be a good out of competition contender," Barbera told The earlier this week. "But then when I saw the film, I realized that it's a great movie."

Kerr is a two-time UFC heavyweight tournament winner and MMA fighter who retired in 2009. Known as "The Smashing Machine," Kerr also struggled with addition to painkillers and opioids, overdosing twice.

Before Johnson was best known as the star of franchises like "Jumanji" and the "Fast & Furious" series, as well as a producer and business owner, he made his name in wrestling. A third-generation wrestler, he won eight WWE championships.

Safdie is an actor, who recently appeared in "Oppenheimer" and "Happy Gilmore 2," and filmmaker who, along with his brother Josh, codirected "Uncut Gems."

In his director's statement for "The Smashing Machine," Safdie called the title, "a perfect onomatopoeia for something visual, conjuring images of domination and destruction with ease."

He added, "Dwayne, Emily and I kept thought 'what is it like to really be Mark Kerr, what is it like to really be Dawn Staples?' We wanted to empathize with these characters in a way that felt like our own feelings… I wanted this movie to exist as a memory for everyone who watches it."

The film is playing in the main competition, with titles like "Frankenstein,""Bugonia," "The Voice of Hind Rajab," "La Grazia " and "No Other Choice" also vying for the top prizes, including acting and directing awards. Winners will be announced on Sept. 6.

"The Smashing Machine" will open in North American theaters on Oct. 3.
