Even Taylor Swift isn't immune to eldest daughter syndrome.
In her newly released 12th studio album, The Life of a Showgirl, the pop superstar explores the traits of firstborn daughters in the aptly titled "Eldest Daughter," which just so happens to be track five—a coveted spot, considering that Swift herself has admitted to placing her most vulnerable and personal song as the fifth on any given album's track list.
Swift describes the armor that eldest daughters learn to hide themselves in, even at the expense of sacrificing their own softness: "Every eldest daughter / Was the first lamb to the slaughter / So we all dressed up as wolves and we looked fire."
Despite enduring a harsh reality that involves "so many traitors, smooth operators," Swift still vows to maintain her own integrity as a loyal and devoted person. That vow could be interpreted as an oath to protect a younger family member, but it also may be interpreted to mean something more romantic. With the news of Swift's engagement to Travis Kelce, it's entirely possible that the chorus (which includes lines like "I'm never gonna break that vow / I'm nеver gonna leave you now, now, now") may have been written with wedding bells in mind.
Swift herself is the eldest child of her family; she has one younger brother, 33-year-old Austin Swift. Though Swift tends to respect the privacy of her immediate family members by rarely mentioning them to press, she recently opened up about Austin's key role in helping her buy back her masters.
"I wanted to buy my music outright. It was a long shot," she said during an August guest appearance on Kelce's podcast, New Heights. "Rather than send lawyers or management, I sent my mom and my brother, who I work with, to L.A. They sat down with [the owners], Shamrock Capital, and told them what this meant to me. They told them the whole story."
Austin also previously made a rare comment on Swift's career during a 2017 interview with Vanity Fair. "She found singing, and I knew from very early on that that was her direction," he told the magazine. "She was never going to quit; that was her thing, that was her life."

Meanwhile, Kelce is the youngest child of his own family (he has one older brother, 37-year-old and fellow NFL player Jason Kelce), a fact that Swift seemingly alludes to at the end of the song's bridge: "Every youngest child felt / They were raised up in the wild / But now you're home."

Everybody's so punk on the internetEveryone's unbothered 'til they're notEvery joke's just trolling and memesSad as it seems, apathy is hotEverybody's cutthroat in the commentsEvery single hot take is cold as iceWhen you found me, I said I was busy, that was a lie
I have been afflicted by a terminal uniquenessI've been dying just from trying to seem coolBut I'm not a bad bitch, and this isn't savageBut I'm never gonna let you downI'm never gonna leave you outSo many traitors, smooth operatorsBut I'm never gonna break that vowI'm nеver gonna leave you now, now, now
You know, thе last time I laughed this hard wasOn the trampoline in somebody's backyardI must've been about eight or nineThat was the night I fell off and broke my armPretty soon, I learned cautious discretionWhen your first crush crushes something kindWhen I said I don't believe in marriage, that was a lie
Every eldest daughterWas the first lamb to the slaughterSo we all dressed up as wolves and we looked fireBut I'm not a bad bitch, and this isn't savageBut I'm never gonna let you downI'm never gonna leave you outSo many traitors, smooth operatorsBut I'm never gonna break that vowI'm never gonna leave you now, now, now
We lie backA beautiful, beautiful time-lapseFerris wheels, kisses, and lilacsAnd things I said were dumb'Cause I thought that I'd never find that beautiful, beautiful life that (Ah)Shimmers that innocent light backLike when we were youngEvery youngest child feltThey were raised up in the wildBut now you're home
'Cause I'm not a bad bitchAnd this isn't savageAnd I'm never gonna let you downI'm never gonna leave you outSo many traitors, smooth operators (Ah, ah)But I'm never gonna break that vow (Never gonna break that vow)I'm never gonna leave you now, now, now
Never gonna break that vow (Ooh)Never gonna leave you now, nowI'm never gonna leave you now
