What is the Purdue Cannon? Purdue-Illinois trophy, explained
According to the Illinois game notes, The Cannon, AKA the Purdue Cannon, made its first trip to Champaign in 1905. A group of Purdue students had brought it over to fire after a Boilermaker. However, despite Purdue winning 29-0, the Purdue Cannon was never fired.
Illinois student Quincy Hall found the Purdue Cannon hidden near the old Illinois Field. He and a group of Delta Upsilon brothers held onto the Cannon until 1943, when it was donated as a symbol of the Illinois-Purdue rivalry.
The Cannon is held by Tomahawk Service and Leadership honorary at Purdue and Illini Pride of Illinois maintains the trophy when the respective school wins the game.
The Purdue Cannon is no longer functional. It was last fired on Nov. 4, 2001, following a 38-13 win for the Fighting Illini in West Lafayette. The Cannon was fired at the Illinois football complex following the victory.
A replica cannon goes to the winner each year.
The Purdue Cannon is one of three rivalry trophies Illinois plays for, along with the Illibuck (Ohio State) and the Land of Lincoln Trophy (Northwestern).
The Beef House Rivalry
An unofficial name for the Purdue-Illinois rivalry has been "The Beef House Rivarly," according to the Indianapolis Star.
"Unofficially, the series has been called the Beef House rivalry. The Beef House, a Covington, Indiana, steak restaurant popular with both schools' sports teams, is roughly midway between the teams' stadiums (47.4 miles from Purdue's Ross-Ade and 43.9 miles from Illinois' Memorial Stadium)."
Purdue-Illinois series record
Purdue leads the all-time series between the two programs 48-46-6. Since the trophy was introduced in 1943, Purdue leads the series 40-31-4. Illinois led the series 15-8-2 before the trophy.
The 100th meeting between the Boilermakers and Fighting Illini occurred on Oct. 12, 2024, in Champaign, Illinois. Illinois pulled out a 50-49 overtime victory. That win snapped a four-game losing streak for Illinois in the series.
The first matchup between the programs occurred on Nov. 22, 1890, a 62-0 win for the Boilermakers in West Lafayette. Illinois' first win in the series was a 34-4 win on Oct. 23, 1987, in Champaign.
The two teams have played every year since 1943, minus the 1945 season due to World War II.
