Prince William shares the unexpected thing he has in common with actor Tom Hanks in a new TV appearance

The Prince of Wales appears on this week's episode of Eugene Levy's Apple TV+ series, The Reluctant Traveler

In addition to sharing his fun connection to Hanks, William also speaks candidly about his childhood, his family life with wife Kate Middleton and his future as king

Prince William is opening up like never before in a new television appearance.

In Friday's new episode of Eugene Levy's Apple TV+ series, The Reluctant Traveler, the Prince of Wales speaks candidly about his childhood, his family life with Kate Middleton and his future as king.

While it's perhaps the most intimate conversation the public has ever seen with the 43-year-old prince, not all of the moments are heavy ones. William and Levy also discuss fond memories of the royal's late grandparents and what hobbies he enjoys with his children, Prince George, 12, Princess Charlotte, 10, and Prince Louis, 7.

"I'm a football fan," he tells the Schitt's Creek star in a sneak peek clip. "I support Aston Villa, have you heard of them? Tom Hanks is a big fan."

The Oscar-winning actor is a longtime supporter of the Birmingham-based club, and Prince William even knew the backstory behind his fandom.

"I love the story that Tom tells about why he suddenly supported Aston Villa — because when he was looking for a team to support, he saw the words 'Aston Villa' and thought that sounded quite like a sunshine-y, nice, 'villa' place to go," the Prince of Wales recounted. "When, actually, if he turns up to Birmingham, it's not that sunshine-y."

Hanks said as much during a 2015 appearance on The Graham Norton Show, admitting, "Now I know [what it's really like], and I'm still with them."

Prince William began supporting the club — who are unfortunately ranked towards the bottom of the Premier League so far this season — when he got "big into football" in school. He told the BBC's Gary Lineker before the 2015 FA Cup that his choice to cheer for the "Villans" rather than one of the more popular clubs was based on a need to go against the grain.

"All my friends at school were either Man United fans or Chelsea fans, and I didn't want to follow the run-of-the-mill teams," the prince explained. "I wanted to have a team that was more mid-table that could give me more emotional rollercoaster moments."

He continued, "Aston Villa's always had a great history. I have got friends of mine who support Aston Villa, and one of the first FA Cup games I went to was Bolton vs. Aston Villa back in 2000... It was fantastic, I sat with all the fans with my red beanie on, and I was sat with all the Brummie fans and had a great time. It was the atmosphere, the camaraderie and I really felt that there was something I could connect with."

William has since passed his love of the club onto his eldest son, Prince George. The pair have attended several games together, including a special father-son outing to the two-part Champions League quarterfinal in April 2025, when the pair attended the away game at Paris Saint-Germain before returning to Villa Park for the conclusion.

While Aston Villa ultimately lost the quarterfinal with an aggregate score of 5-4, the memories with his son made the stressful matches more than worth it.

"I thought, it's been 43 years since anything like this has happened in my generation as a Villa fan, and I want George to experience a night out away from home in a big European competition," William told TNT Sports at the time. "I hope it's not 43 years until the next time it happens, but I think those memories are really important to create and to bring him along tonight is a big deal for me."

In his episode of The Reluctant Traveler, Prince William gives Levy a tour of Windsor Castle, opening up about how it reminds him of his late grandmother Queen Elizabeth.

"It's been quite a bit of change, so you do sort of — you think about them not being here anymore and particularly being in Windsor, for me Windsor is her," he said. "She loved it here; she spent most of her time here. Showing you around today is very much a case of trying to make sure I'm doing it in the way she'd want you to see it."

He also addresses the challenges his family has faced in recent years, including both Kate and King Charles announcing cancer diagnoses.

Prince William said, "I'd say '23-'24 was the hardest year I've ever had. You know, life is sent to test us, and being able to overcome that is what makes us who we are."

The Reluctant Traveler's U.K. episode will drop on Apple TV+ on Friday, Oct. 3. New episodes will be released weekly.
