Nothing brings people together like tragedy, and few shows know tragedy like Grey's Anatomy. So it's not surprising that Maggie (Kelly McCreary) returns to Seattle after the hospital explosion.
Amelia (Caterina Scorsone) won't get out of bed because she's buried in grief and guilt over Monica's (Natalie Morales) death, and the only people who stand a chance of getting her up and functional are her sisters. Someone has to cook Amelia a home-cooked meal, and we all know that was never going to fall to Meredith (Ellen Pompeo).

However, this week is the milestone 450th episode of Grey's Anatomy, which means Maggie's visit comes with a massive surprise. She reveals that she's pregnant just as Meredith and Amelia are talking about needing your people around you. It turns out that Maggie has been busy in Chicago, and her next chapter will be starting her own family. Both Meredith and Amelia have been down this road before, and they immediately jump in to help Maggie process the fact that she's going to be a mom.
Parade caught up with Kelly McCreary to talk all about Maggie's big announcement, what it means for her future on the show, and celebrating Grey's big moment.

What was it like being told you were coming back and then finding out that Maggie is pregnant? This is right in keeping with all of my invitations. When I first joined the cast, I was just auditioning for a doctor, but when I show up, it's Meredith's sister. They said, "Come back, we'd love to have you for the 450th episode." I said, "Oh wow, what an honor. Of course, I would love to come back." It'll be a sister storyline. Oh my goodness, how wonderful! That just warms my heart. And then it was, "You're pregnant." It was completely shocking to me. It's really keeping in the tradition of Grey's in the sense that women on the show have all carved their own paths. I have always admired how they zig and zag to chase whatever fulfills them. I love seeing that on a show where you can do that because it's been on for so long. These characters have existed in this space for so long. That's life, right? We change our path, our prerogatives, and our priorities. Maggie, to everyone's shock, mine included, decided to have a baby.
What can you say about the baby's father and Maggie's current relationship status? She does say the baby's father is a donor. You have to sort of use your imagination to fill in the gaps of what Maggie has been doing and been up to in Chicago. I feel like this desire to create her own family is because she's so far away from home. The thing that she has always needed around her is her people. She left her parents in Boston to go find the rest of her people, her biological people. I think it's part of that same impulse to have a really strong, meaningful connection. Having her own kids is the next way to have that.
What kind of mother do you think Maggie will be? She has those Ellis Grey genes, but she grew up in a much more supportive household. Will it be nature or nurture? She's going to be Type A. That baby is going to be organized. That baby is going to be on a schedule. I think she's going to be the kind of mom who brings her kid with her everywhere. Get on board. Come be with me at work. Be on my body as I move through the day. Maggie went to go do research in Chicago, why can't the baby be in the lab?
What is it about Meredith, Maggie, and Amelia's relationship that keeps them so close when they are such very different people? They've all gone through so much and been there for each other. That's what forges it. It forces an incredible friendship. That forges bonds, and it is how you find out who shows up for you in your time of need, who is loyal, who is protective, and who also really tells you the truth. That is a safe space for all of these women, and they provide that for each other.

Amelia says she's taking a sabbatical to be with "her people "at the end of the episode. Is that maybe in Chicago with Maggie?Wouldn't that be wonderful? Amelia has people in a lot of places, right? She's got a big old family, lots of sisters. I think it would be really cool to see where Meg [Marinis, executive producer] and the team take Amelia's storyline because there's so many directions that it could go. It's all about what's next in Amelia's journey and what character they feel can provide the next transformational interaction.
The sisters talk about whether Maggie is going to tell Winston about the baby, but what about Richard? He's going to be the grandfather. I think he's going to love it. Who wouldn't? My daughter is four, and I can't wait to be a grandma. It's kind of the best thing about being a parent, getting to that sweetness later in life. I think that Richard is going to be thrilled. That's a scene that I would love to see: Maggie telling Richard and introducing the baby to Richard. Can you imagine him holding her?
What does it mean to you to be on a show that is celebrating 450 episodes? It's an unfathomable honor. I've said this time and time again, so forgive me for being redundant, but it's just the truth. As an actor, you hope to have incredible opportunities to play different characters and stay employed. The idea of getting to be on a show that has historical significance and massive cultural significance, and to be able to do it for a long period of time, is incredible. To be part of the legacy of a show that now has 450 episodes and is seen in like 180 countries all over the world, and reached three generations of people…To be a part of something that has that kind of impact and matters so much to people is incredibly humbling. It's unbelievable and really hard to wrap your brain around.
What do you think Maggie having this baby means for you returning to the show?I don't think this baby should grow up without her cousins and aunties. I don't know what Meg and the team are planning, but I am sure whatever it is — whether it's a remote presence or an in-person presence — it will be brilliant, fun, and delightful, and that all of the sisters get what they need from it. But your guess is as good as mine.
Grey's Anatomy continues Thursdays at 10 p.m. ET on ABC. Episodes are available to stream the next day on Hulu.
