A gunman has been arrested after he allegedly shot up to 50 bullets into a busy Sydney street, critically injuring at least one person.

The 60-year-old suspect allegedly opened fire from the window of a flat in Croydon Park, in the west of the city, just before 7.45pm local time (9.45am BST) on Sunday evening.

Residents were forced to run for cover as bullets struck passing vehicles and a nearby bus shelter.

Police locked down the suburb following reports of the shooting, which continued over a two-hour period until about 9.45pm local time (11.45am BST).

A tactical police unit moved in to arrest the gunman. He was initially taken to hospital before being transferred to a police station.

Authorities said the suspect has no known links to organised crime, terrorism or mental health issues, and the motive remains unclear. A high-calibre rifle was seized during the arrest.

Acting Supt Stephen Parry said at a press conference on Monday that officers had yet to formally interview the man, but he was "speaking freely with police". The gunman is yet to be charged.

"[He] does have a couple of children and has very few recorded interactions with the police over the last 20 years," he said.

It was not confirmed whether police officers had also fired their weapons during the stand-off.

'Serious and terrifying'

One man in his 50s, a backseat passenger travelling through Croydon Park with his family, was struck by a bullet.

He presented himself to hospital with gunshot wounds, including one to the neck, and underwent surgery.

"My understanding is that the injuries are not life-threatening and he is expected to survive, thankfully," Mr Parry said.

A man and a woman in their 30s presented to a police station with injuries and were taken to hospital.

Two other men were treated at the scene for similar injuries and transported to hospital.

Paramedics treated a total of 16 people at the scene for minor injuries, including shock and cuts from broken glass. Six people were admitted to hospital.

"It is incredible no one has died or received more serious injuries because of this," Mr Parry said.

"In my 35 years in the police, there have been very few incidents of this nature, where someone fires randomly at people in the street or passing vehicles."

Police confirmed the man did not hold a gun licence and detectives were investigating whether the weapon was owned legally.

A taxi driver who witnessed the ordeal told Channel Nine he had been driving when he heard a "bang, bang, bang".

"And then I looked next to me, and I saw a couple of holes through the window. How he missed me, I don't know, I'm just shocked," he said.

Mal Lanyon, the New South Wales police commissioner, described the shooting on Monday as "serious and terrifying".

Chris Minns, the premier of New South Wales, praised the bravery of police officers and emergency services.

"I saw first-hand the composure, professionalism and courage of the officers who responded to this life-threatening incident," he said in a statement.
