New week, new case for the High Potentialdetectives and their invaluable consultant Morgan (Kaitlin Olson). The episode opens with a woman seemingly hiding in a basement terrified, telling someone, "He's here," as a door opens and screams ensue.
Cut to the squad room where we learn that Lt. Soto (Judy Reyes) is up for a promotion to Captain. While that decision hangs in the balance, the gang gets their next case involving the 911 call from the woman in the basement who says she has witnessed a murder. And from there, they're off! But, of course, no case is so cut and dry.

When Morgan and Karadec (Daniel Sunjata) visit the home where the 911 call was made, Raina, the woman who allegedly made the call, insists she did no such thing. However Morgan detects that the woman's accent is the exact same rare accent as that of the 911 caller. Karadec asks to look at her cell phone, but there's no 911 call listed. With Raina wanting them to leave and no signs of obvious foul play, Karadec ushers Morgan out the door and says there's nothing more they can do if Raina doesn't want to talk. But, at Morgan's encouragement, Karadec agrees to put unmarked surveillance outside of her home.
Is there any sign of Roman in this episode of High Potential?
Unfortunately, no. We're still in a holding pattern on the mystery surrounding Roman, Morgan's ex and the father of her oldest child Ava. We do catch Morgan running a search to learn more about Arthur Ellis (Mekhi Phifer) and his connection to Roman. That search is cut short when Karadec gets a call—a body was found at Raina's home.
They go back to the house to find Raina dead on the floor at the bottom of the stairs. At first it's thought that perhaps she took a tumble on her own, but Morgan thinks that's unlikely because there are no marks from her many rings on the banister from trying to hang on. Oz and Daphne learn that there was a big party across the street the night before, so they head over there to question the homeowner, Logan. It turns out Logan is a drug dealer and when they realize this he tries to flee, but gets hit by a car and arrested by Oz.
While he's in a holding cell, Karadec and Morgan question him about whether or not someone died at his party. It turns out Logan used to sell Raina migraine medication that she could no longer get through insurance. "I really liked that lady," Logan says. "I would never hurt her."
Logan proceeds to tell the detectives that he was with Raina at 9:30 a.m. that morning when she allegedly made the 911 call. They were in her basement looking for things she could sell to pay her bills. Then he got a call and took it upstairs, never seeing her make a call herself. Meanwhile Raina stayed downstairs for a few minutes, then came back up with no mention of having witnessed a murder.
Did Raina really see a murder?
Yes, but not that day. In Raina's basement Morgan and Karadec do find Logan's fingerprints on some boxes, which confirms his timeline. Then they find an old cell phone that Raina used to make the 911 call. They also notice that there are boxes of brand new pots and pans downstairs, and Morgan remembers that everything is displaced in Raina's kitchen and that she keeps burning her cookware, probably from leaving the stove on. They come to the conclusion that Raina had dementia, because the medication Logan said was for migraines also treats the disease. This is why she couldn't remember making the 911 call. While trying to figure out what could have triggered an old memory of Raina's to make her think she was witnessing a murder, Morgan and Karadec find a bloodied dress in the basement sink.
Morgan deduces that the dress is made from Tencel, a material that wasn't available until 1985. She then goes on to look at the tag and they are able to narrow the manufacturing time of the dress to between 1998 and 2000. After whittling down the number of cold cases Daphne says the dress must have belonged to Greta St. John, a woman who was shot, killed and found in an alley near The Black Jewel nightclub.

How is Greta connected to Raina?
Daphne and Oz go to visit the former owner of the club, Eddie, and learn that Greta performed there the night of her murder. He tells the detectives she was about to go big and that Raina was not happy about it.
At the same time Karadec and Morgan are interviewing a woman named Lucy whose number they found on Raina's phone and whom she called a lot. Lucy tells them that Greta and Raina were musical rivals at The Black Jewel. Lucy is a photographer who claims she met Raina when she was photographing a story about women who found themselves on the brink of fame but couldn't make it in the cutthroat LA music scene.
Both Eddie and Lucy bring up a man named Mac Epps who was originally Greta's manager, but then started working with Raina as well. Mac was arrested on drug charges and spent time in prison. When he got out, he wanted credit for Greta's success and didn't take it well when she wanted nothing to do with him. Essentially, Mac was using Raina as a pawn against Greta.
"He was a dangerous man with powerful friends, even then," Lucy tells them. "That's why Greta wanted nothing to do with him. He turned her family's life upside down for decades."
The fate of Soto's promotion is revealed
Back at the precinct Morgan gets a text from Ava, prompting her to try calling Arthur, but his voice mailbox is full.
Soto announces to everyone that she is not getting the Captain's chair and all she knows is they're bringing someone in from another squad.
As the investigation into Raina's murder, as well as Greta's, continues, Mac becomes the number one suspect for both. It turns out that for the first few years after Raina bought her house, Mac's name was on the deed. And surveillance footage from outside of The Black Jewel a few days earlier shows Raina and Mac arguing.
Karadec and Morgan pay a visit to The Black Jewel to chat with Mac, who isn't interested in talking, threatening to send his lawyer after them if they return.
At the precinct, Soto and Morgan realize there are clues from some photos of Greta that show she had a baby, but that she must have been keeping that child hidden from Mac. If Mac knew that Greta had a child (presumably his) that she was keeping from him, that would be his motive to kill her.
When Karadec returned to the club to arrest Mac, he finds him holding a gun to a woman's head. Karadec fires at Mac and ends up in hot water with internal affairs. Ultimately, however, he's still allowed to pursue the case. When he and Morgan do a little more digging, they learn that while Mac finally admitted to killing Greta, he couldn't have been responsible for killing Raina. This is because there was a receipt found in his car that he was visiting a federal prison in the Mojave Desert on the day of Raina's murder.
After looking at the evidence again, it dawns on Morgan that she knows exactly where to find Greta's now grown child and Raina's killer—they're the same person and that person is Lucy.
Lucy attempted to get close to Raina in order to find out more about her mother, who she never really had a chance to know. But Lucy never disclosed her actual identity to Raina. With her dementia episodes becoming more frequent, Raina confided in Lucy that she helped cover up Greta's murder. Lucy wanted Raina to come clean to her about more but Raina ultimately freaked out on Lucy, and that's when Lucy snapped, pushing Raina down the stairs.
We get our first look at Captain Nick Wagner
With both cases put to bed, Morgan has a heart-to-heart with Soto, who admits she's disappointed she didn't get the promotion to Captain. On her way out the door after a long day of work, Morgan finds herself in the elevator with one Steve Howey (yes, Van from Reba and Kevin from Shameless, among other roles). After a little witty banter between the two, she learns that this mustached stranger is their new Captain—Nick Wagner.
We'll have to wait until next week to see how he changes the dynamic in the precinct, and whether we'll get any movement on the Roman mystery.
