A 13-year-old boy in Georgia is recovering after suffering a severe spinal cord injury while playing football.
Kelvin "Bug" Howard, an eighth grader at Appling Middle School in Macon, was injured during his school's game on Saturday, Oct. 4, according to WGXA-TV and WSB-TV.
Howard went down hard after hitting another player and remained motionless on the field as trainers rushed to his side.
"My heart dropped," his mother, Doris Howard, told WGXA. "The boy had the ball, and my son hit him. The coach said he hit him so hard that when Bug stood up, he fell back down — and everybody ran onto the field."
Howard, a mother of 11, was working two hours away and drove to Macon before she turned around and went back to Atlanta, where her son was airlifted to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta.
Kelvin, who fractured his spine and hip and suffered a concussion, has been in the ICU since the accident.
In the wake of Kelvin's accident, his mother shared in a GoFundMe that her family members' "lives have changed in ways we never imagined."
"I've had to step away from work to care for Kelvin full-time and support our other 10 children," Howard wrote. "With a household of 13, every day brings challenges, but also countless blessings."
Howard is raising money through GoFundMe for his treatment, and has nearly reached her $26K goal as of Friday afternoon.
The middle schooler is slowly recovering, however, and doctors told his parents that he will be able to walk in the future.
"A couple of weeks ago, he started having feeling in his legs, and he started moving them," Howard told WGXA. "Every day I see him, I see that fight in him. He always says, 'I'm going to get up, I'm going to walk, I'm going to do this. We're not going to be here long, Mom.' And I believe that, I believe every word he says."
