A multistate salmonella outbreak linked to a meal delivery service has sickened 16 people across 10 states, resulting in seven hospitalizations, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warned in a Sept. 5 notice.
The outbreak has been attributed to Metabolic Meals, a meal kit service for healthy food that focuses on macro nutrition and elements like low carb, high protein and clean eating. The company prepares and delivers frozen, ready-to-eat meals to subscription customers.
The CDC is investigating the outbreak alongside the company to determine which component in the meals is making people sick. Because it can take three to four weeks to confirm a salmonella infection, and these types of infections tend to only be reported by people experiencing more severe symptoms, the number of illnesses is likely underreported and may continue to grow, said the CDC.
USA TODAY has reached out to Metabolic Meals for comment.
Here's what we know about the outbreak so far.

Symptoms of salmonella infection usually start six hours to six days after swallowing the bacteria. The most common symptoms are diarrhea, fever and stomach cramps, according to the CDC.
While most healthy people can recover in four to seven days without treatment, some vulnerable people like children under 5, adults 65 and older, and those with weakened immune systems may experience more severe illness that requires medical treatment or hospitalization.
If you display any of these more serious symptoms, the CDC advises contacting your health care professional:
Diarrhea and a fever higher than 102 degrees Fahrenheit
Diarrhea for more than three days that is not improving
Bloody diarrhea
So much vomiting that you cannot keep liquids down
Signs of dehydration, such as not peeing much, dry mouth and throat, and feeling dizzy when standing up
