Refocused US rebounds from Italy shocker, beats Canada to reach WBC semifinals

HOUSTON (AP) — The United States is heading to the semifinals of the World Baseball Classic after a "different level of focus" helped this All-Star-studded team rebound from a shocking loss.

WBC United States Canada Baseball

The U.S. beat Canada 5-3 on Friday nightfor a spot in the semifinals Sunday against the Dominican Republic. The big win came afteran 8-6 loss to Italy in pool playleft them needing help to advance to Friday's game.

"Guys really locked in," Yankees star Aaron Judge said. "We saw a different level of focus at our workout the other day and then even pregame today. It felt like the boys were locked and ready to go."

The loss to Italy elicited criticism of the team and particularly manager Mark DeRosa after he prematurely said on a television interview the morning of the loss to Italy that: "Our ticket's punched to the quarterfinals."

Judge said he knows a lot of people had negative things to say about them after the Italy game, but they didn't pay it any mind.

"There's a lot of noise that's been going on with that," he said. "And I think it just speaks volumes to the players in this room, the manager we've got, everybody, that no matter what's being said about us, what's going on, we still got a job to do on the field."

First baseman Bryce Harper echoed Judge's sentiments that they didn't worry about what outsiders were saying about the team.

"People are going to have their opinion about us," he said. "I don't think any of them are going to be sitting at our dinner table or our Thanksgiving dinner, so it doesn't really matter what anybody says, that's always been my call on that kind of stuff."

The Americans did eventually punch their ticket to the quarterfinalswhen Italy beat Mexicoto win Pool B and give the U.S. second place.

Starter Logan Webb, who threw 4 2/3 scoreless innings Friday night, said the team's path to the semifinals was not ideal but he was proud that the guys got the job done.

"It kind of feels like a second chance and... I felt like it was a newfound energy today," he said.

Third baseman Alex Bregman appreciated the professionalism in the clubhouse as the team dealt with the adversity from the loss to Italy.

"One of the biggest things that you see around all these great players is everyone's present and they're not worried about the future or the past," he said. "They're worried about that game, that moment, that pitch, the next pitch. And it was just a good, good response today."

Now the challenge gets even bigger as the U.S. faces a Dominican team that beat South Korea 10-0 Fridayin seven innings to advance to the semifinals.

The Americans will send reigning NL Cy Young Award winner Paul Skenes to the mound Sunday to contend with a roster that is also chock full of All-Stars.

"I expect it to be like one of the best games of all time," DeRosa said.

Judge is thrilled that the team is heading to Miami and can't wait for what's waiting for the U.S. there.

"The boys are excited, that's for sure," he said. "Definitely getting a taste for playoff atmosphere in March, definitely gets the juices flowing a little bit."

F1 had scheduled a race in Bahrain for April 12 and another in Saudi Arabia on April 19, two mainstays on the calendar for years.

But the war launched by the United States and Israel on Iran has spread across the regionand intothosetwo countries, creating major security concerns and uncertainty about whether traveling or racing there will be safe.

The news was first reported Friday bySky Sports, which said the cancellation could be announced by the end of this weekend. It would cut the number of race weekends this year from 24 to 22.

A Formula 1 spokesperson declined to comment.

F1 officials have beenwrestling with the issuefor nearly two weeks, since the war began. The lack of a formal decision at this time could mean they're biding time to see if the situation improves quickly. Alternately they could simply be waiting until the end of this weekend's Chinese Grand Prix to make it official.

There are no current plans to replace the Middle East races but that prospect hasn't been ruled out, sources said. That is seen as a difficult task on such a short time frame.

Failure to replace either Grand Prix would leave the month of April without any F1 races, a financial hit to the sport and a blow for its fans. The seasonbegan last weekend in Australia.

Seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton voiced confidence in Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali to make the right decision.

"I know that Stefano will do what is right for all of us and the sport," Hamilton said, according toESPN.

World Baseball Classic: Team USA sets up semifinal clash with Dominican Republic after close win over Canada

It will be Team USA against the Dominican Republic in the first semifinal of the 2026 World Baseball Classic after a close win by the former and a blowout win by the latter.

Yahoo Sports

Team USA defeated Canada, 5-3, Friday to move a win away from a repeat appearance in the WBC championship game, taking a significant lead early and holding on as its neighbors to the north rallied.

The Americans scored in spurts, but never put away the Canadians. They took a seemingly safe 5-0 lead in the top of the sixth inning, until Canada responded with a three-run rally capped off by a Bo Naylor homer in the bottom of the frame.

Canada had a prime chance to tie the game with two runners in scoring position and no outs in the seventh inning, but Team USA's David Bednar escaped the danger with a pop-out and two strikeouts against the heart of the opposing lineup.

It wasn't the blowout many expected after Team USA entered the game as a -800 favorite. Logan Webb, limited by a 70-pitch maximum, was good in 4 2/3 innings of work, but the middle relief corps nearly coughed up the game.

Team USA will need more in its next game, judging how Friday's earlier game went. The D.R. demolished Korea, ending the game in the seventh inning on an Austin Wells three-run homer to make it 10-0, triggering the WBC's mercy rule.

Five games is a limited sample, and it might be hyperbolic to say when it's won four of those games, but it's hard to see Team USA as the tournament's top team after its loss to Italy and closer-than-needed wins over Mexico and Canada. The vaunted lineup has been less than dominant against every pitching staff with major leaguers (read: the ones that aren't Brazil or Great Britain), and the pitching staff has been as uneven as you see in a typical spring training game.

It can all change in a single game, though. We'll see if that's the case in Miami at 8 p.m. ET on Sunday (Fox Sports 1).
