The Ravens also activated UFL quarterback Austin Reed to the 53-man roster after signing him earlier this week . Reed will be the backup for undrafted rookie Joe Fagnano, who is set to make his first career start on Thursday against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Jackson injured his thumb during Sunday's 36-10 loss to the Buffalo Bills on Baltimore's first offensive play. Jackson was making his return from a three-week absence with a high-ankle sprain, and he got injured on his first throw since Week 4 against the Tennessee Titans.

Bills linebacker Greg Rousseau made contact with Jackson's hand while attempting to defend the pass, and Jackson immediately walked off the field and into the Baltimore locker room.

The Ravens quickly ruled him out of the rest of the game with the thumb injury. Head coach Jesse Minter told reporters postgame that Jackson would require surgery on his injured thumb a stint on injured reserve.

The Ravens did not reveal Sunday the precise nature of Jackson's injury, only that he had injured the thumb on his throwing hand. Asked at the time if the injury was season-ending, Minter said "we'll see ."

Huntley, meanwhile, was diagnosed with a turf toe injury that is reportedly season-ending . Huntley, a career backup, started three games this seaosn while Jackson was out with the ankle injury.

The injury is a critical blow for the Ravens and Jackson, whose recent seasons have been marred by injury. Jackson's a two-time MVP and one of the game's best players when healthy. When Jackson's available, the Ravens are regularly considered Super Bowl contenders.

Still, help is reportedly on the way , with Baltimore reportedly acquiring Jacoby Brissett in a trade with the Arizona Cardinals. The trade will reportedly not be completed until this weekend, meaning that Brissett cannot start for the Ravens on Thursday; he is reportedly expected to be the starter in Week 10.

But leg and back injuries sidelined Jackson for four games in 2025 and limited his play in others. The result for the Ravens was a disappointing 8-9 campaign that fell short of the playoffs.

Jackson missed five regular games in each of the 2021 and 2022 seasons. Including Sunday's game in which he played just one snap, Jackson's missed a total of 21 games since his rookie campaign in 2018. The 4-4 Ravens now face another season of fighting for a playoff spot with their MVP quarterback on the sideline.

The injury arrives at a critical juncture of Jackson's career. Jackson, 29, is on the fourth year of a five-year, $260 million contract. Team owner Steve Bisciotti has expressed his desire to make Jackson a Raven for life, but the two sides reportedly haven't engaged in substantial contract negotiations .

Now those contract talks and decisions will take place in the context of another of Jackson's seasons significantly limited by injury.
