Spoiler alert! The following contains details from the Season 2 premiere of CBS's "Matlock."

Matty and Olympia may be something close to friends again, but that doesn't mean either of them is being honest with the other.

The biggest twist in the Season 2 premiere of CBS's kicky lawyer drama "Matlock" (Thursdays, 9 ET/PT) is a sad one for fans of the series' central friendship between Kathy Bates' 70-something lawyer Matty and her boss Olympia (Skye P. Marshall). At the end of Season 1, Olympia discovered Matty Matlock had been lying about her whole life and persona as she infiltrated the law firm of Jacobson Moore, searching for a villain who hid evidence that could have saved lives in the opioid epidemic, particularly Matty's own daughter.

It was a betrayal followed by a détente between the friends. But while they're smiling in person, they're sneaking behind each others' backs in the premiere episode, which saw at least one actual case of smoke and mirrors, and two cases of life-altering paternity. The episode set up a season full of drama and intrigue for the cast. (The sophomore season's trajectory will eventually likely be affected by off-screen events, after cast member David Del Rio was fired amid reports of sexual misconduct involving a female co-star.)

Here's everything you from the literally explosive "Matlock" Season 2 premiere.

Kathy Bates as Madeline "Matty" Matlock in "Matlock."Olympia is covering for Julian − and Matty knows it

In the Season 1 finale, Olympia discovered that the person who illegally hid the incriminating documents was her ex-husband, and father of her children, Julian (Jason Ritter). Julian convinced her not to turn him in to the press or authorities yet, although Olympia refused to help him further cover up his crime by destroying the document herself. Instead, she took it and secured it in a safe in her house while she tries to pin the crime on Julian's father Senior (Beau Bridges), who had ordered Julian to hide the evidence.

Olympia is clearly torn about the situation, and almost confesses to Matty, but her fear that Julian's crimes could ruin the lives of their children keeps her mouth shut and her mind focused on exposing Senior. She and Matty look for the identity of a woman he may have been seeing romantically who could have more evidence of his wrongdoings.

But Olympia isn't as accomplished a liar as her septuagenarian associate. Matty instantly adds up all the weird vibes Olympia is giving and figures out what she is hiding. By using a smoke bomb in Olympia's kitchen (it's relevant to the case of the week, OK?) she manages to steal Olympia's keys, open the safe, steal the document and replace it with a dummy. At the end of the episode, she and husband Edwin (Sam Anderson) are determined to forward the evidence to the press, whether Olympia likes it or not.

Also in the Season 1 finale, a man showed up at Matty's house claiming to be the father of her 14-year-old grandson Alfie (Aaron D. Harris), who Matty and Edwin have been raising since their daughter died. Matty's hackles are up as the man, a former addict like her late daughter who has been out of Alfie's life for over a decade, wants to meet her grandson. She demands a DNA test.

The test confirms the mystery man is indeed Alfie's father, and also that he's not as sober as he claims to be. Matty and Edwin want to abscond with Alfie as soon as they wrap up the opioids investigation, but considering the show doesn't really work if Matty leaves the law firm, something is bound to get in their way.

And speaking of changing plans, Matty's fellow associate at the firm Billy (Del Rio) is coping with the news that his ex is pregnant with his baby. He promises to support her decision to keep or terminate the pregnancy, but secretly hopes he won't become a father just yet. However, he comes back from a meeting with his ex to announce that they're getting back together to raise the baby. Everything should go well there, especially after she dumped him the day he tried to propose, right?
