"View-Master was one of my favorite toys when I was a kid (still is), because it gave me a chance to explore faraway worlds without ever leaving my room," Johnston said in a statement. "I would escape into those slides for hours at a time, and no one would yell at me for staring. I want to bring the wonder I felt as a bowl-haired kid in the '80s to the big screen now, and working with Mattel, Sony, and Escape Artists is giving me the chance to do just that."

Johnston's credits also include writing and co-directing Netflix's 2025 movieThe Twits, based on the Roald Dahl book of the same name, and writing the 2011 Ed Helms comedyCedar Rapids.

Toy company Mattel has some experience translating its toys, such as He-Man and Barbie, to the big screen. The latter, in particular, became a sensation when it was released in 2023.

With a star-studded cast that included Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling, Issa Rae, Simu Liu, Kate McKinnon, Will Ferrell, and American Ferrera, the film drew such a large audience that it was one-half of theBarbenheimer phenomenonthat lured audiences off their couches and back into theaters in 2023.

Mattel is optimistic.

"View-Master has always been pure magic to me — a simple toy that opened entire worlds beyond imagination," Tom McNulty, a senior executive for Mattel Film, said. "It's an incredible honor to have the brilliant Phil Johnston, one of the most soulful and inventive storytellers in film, at the helm of the View-Master reimagining. Building on our wonderful collaboration with Todd and Jason at Escape Artists onMasters of the Universeand now joining forces with Sony Pictures Entertainment, we're thrilled for the opportunity to bring a timeless classic into a bold new era—and to inspire new audiences to see the world with wonder."

The tale of He-Man will be highlighted inMasters of the Universe, which is set for release June 5, 2026. Nicholas Galitzine stars as He-Man in the film, with Camila Mendes as Teela and Idris Elba as Duncan/Man-At-Arms.

Oprah Winfrey picks Ann Packer's 'Some Bright Nowhere' for book club

NEW YORK (AP) — Ann Packer's "Some Bright Nowhere," her first novel in a decade, isOprah Winfrey'slatestbook club pick.

Published on Tuesday, "Some Bright Nowhere" is the story of a long-married couple and the questions they confront when the wife becomes terminally ill and makes a dying wish that two close friends care for her instead of her husband.

"This beautifully written story is going to get you thinking about some things that really matter," Winfrey said in a statement. "The story leaves you questioning the obligations of marriage and the difference between male and female friendships, and one of the most significant of questions: How do you want to spend your last days?"

Packer, 66, is best known for her highly praised novel, "The Dive from Clausen's Pier," which came out in 2002. She has also published the novels "Songs Without Words" and "The Children's Crusade" and the short fiction collection "Mendocino and Other Stories." Likeother authors selected by Winfrey,Packer learned she had been chosen through an unexpected telephone call.

"I don't think I've ever said 'Oh my God' so many times in so few minutes," Packer said in a statement.

Tuesday's announcement continues Winfrey's partnership with Starbucks. She and Packer spoke recently at a Starbucks in New York City, and their conversation is airing on Winfrey's YouTube channel and other podcast outlets.

Oprah Winfrey chose Ann Packer's novel "Some Bright Nowhere" as her November book club pick.

Reader's Guide QuestionsThe novel opens with the cessation of Claire's treatment, immediately positioning her at a threshold. How does Packer use the landscape of illness to explore Claire's interiority and her assertion of agency over her own narrative?Eliot's displacement as primary caregiver is a central conflict. To what extent is his struggle about love for Claire versus a loss of control and identity? Discuss the novel's commentary on gender roles within caregiving.Claire's decision to spend her final days with Holly and Michelle, rather than her husband, is a radical act. What does this choice suggest about the different forms of intimacy and support she requires? How does it challenge conventional notions of marital duty?Consider Eliot's recurring tendency to "concede" rather than agree in his marriage. How does this dynamic, established over decades, inform his actions and reactions during the crisis of Claire's illness? The title,Some Bright Nowhere, is a phrase from a poem that is sent to Eliot by a friend that he then shares with Claire. Analyze this phrase. How does it function as a metaphor for death, acceptance, or the existential space the characters inhabit?Packer intricately weaves past and present, using memory to illuminate character motivations. How do objects and memories shape the narrative's emotional resonance? How do specific spaces evoke both the past and the present?Analyze the role of setting, from the cluttered intimacy of the family home to the stark beauty of the Maine coast. How does the physical environment reflect the characters' internal states and the shifting dynamics between them?Eliot's act of breaking into Holly's email and later throwing the chair in Maine are moments of profound transgression. What do these actions reveal about his character arc? Are they acts of desperation, violation, or a painful breaking point leading to self-awareness?The novel resists a simple, sentimental depiction of dying. Claire herself notes, "Just because it's the end, that doesn't make it bigger." How does the narrative balance the gravity of death with the mundane, often messy, realities of life?Reflect on the novel's ending and the final moments between Claire and Eliot. Does their reconciliation feel earned? What does the quiet resolution suggest about the nature of love, forgiveness, and the legacy we leave behind?

Since breaking onto the scene with his eponymous label in 2017, Ludovic de Saint Sernin has made a name for himself dressing some of this generation's coolest It girls, actresses, and musicians, whether it beKylie Jenner,Laura Harrier,orCharli XCX. (His personal favorite?Hunter Schaferdonning a barely-there feather and slip skirt from his Ann Demeulemeester fall/winter 2023 collection to theVanity FairOscar party.) The designer is famed for his BDSM-inspired garments steeped in sex appeal—his dresses are often made from leather straps and accenting metal grommets that snatch the body, and he draws inspiration from boundary-breaking artists like Robert Mapplethorpe, whose imagery he directly referenced in his fall/winter 2024 collection in official partnership with the Mapplethorpe Foundation.

2025 has been quite the year for the French phenom, too. In January, de Saint Sernin was the final guest designer to create a collection forJean Paul Gaultier couture. "Can you believe it was just this year?" he tells ELLE. The designer calls the experience one of the "biggest privileges" of his existence. "It truly was a magnificent time in my life—the research, the fittings, the atelier, the teams, the creative collaborators, the garments, the models, the celebrities—it was all perfect!"

Though the last batch of projects has been a self-described whirlwind, de Saint Sernin is now bringing his creative energy to Zara for an equally sultry collaboration. "There have been so many incredible moments in the last couple of years where I had to pause for a sec, take a breath, and realize I am making a dream come true," he says. From start to finish, the collection—and the campaign, starringAmelia GrayandAlex Consani, shot by Gordon von Steiner—was yet another "pinch me" moment.

"From the storyboard, to being on set in New York City, to closing Wall Street and strutting with my girls while wearing a collection I designed for Zara that's going to be available worldwide and will reach so many people, I feel very lucky that I get to do this," says de Saint Sernin. "I invited my mom to join so she could share this experience with me, and seeing the look in her eyes while this was all happening is a memory I'll never forget."

The collaboration evokes now-signature codes for de Saint Sernin, including low-slung leather pants, a black transparent dress with a leather bra top, a classic black leather trench, and a chain mail two-piece set perfect for party-hopping on New Year's Eve. The designer began sketching over a year ago, pondering how to bring his distinct silhouettes to the global retailer, and eventually decided that the campaign needed to be set in NYC. "It's a city that means so much to me but also feels global the way Zara does—it's for everyone who has a dream." says de Saint Sernin. "And that's what this collection is, a dream."

The lineup, as a result, mirrors much of his own personal style, though in his day-to-day life he says that he tends to dress more "French" than anything else. Explains de Saint Sernin, "I like to be chic, timeless, and comfortable. But when it comes down to going out, I like to have fun, be bold and hot, 'cause I don't know how long I'm gonna look the way I do now, so I want to enjoy it while I can and have no regrets. I want to try everything once."

The collection will be available for purchase on November 17.

NEED TO KNOW

  • Little House on the Prairie cast members are remembering one historically inaccurate detail that pops up frequently throughout the show

  • Speaking on a podcast, Alison Arngrim said that many of the actresses on the show wore acrylic nails

  • "They all had the French tips. It was so 'in' in the early eighties," she said

TheLittle House on the Prairiecast is remembering some of the show's historical inaccuracies, noting that long acrylic nails with French manicures (popularized in the 1970s and 1980s) can be seen throughout episodes set in the late 1800s.

In the Nov. 6, 2025, episode of theLittle House 50podcast, co-hosts Pamela Bob, Alison Arngrim and Dean Butler spoke about the nails and how they continually pop up throughout the show — particularly in season 5, episode 9, titled "The Wedding."

At one point in the episode, Mary Ingalls accepts Adam Kendall's long-awaited marriage proposal — which is exactly when co-host Bob notes that audiences can see Mary's decidedly synthetic manicure.

"This is the moment when we first see the nails, the French tips," Bob says in the podcast.

Arngrim — who played Nellie Oleson on the show —adds that the more modern nails can be seen "repeatedly through this episode," with Bob adding: "They're shiny, shiny new. Beautiful. They are shiny new acrylics."

Arngrim then described how she, too, loves a fresh manicure, but always made a point of removing any polish before filming days.

"Now you know I love doing my nails ... I love doing my nails," she said. "I did do that. Even during the show, I know I did not have any sort of acrylics during the show [but] I would often on the weekend paint my nails many interesting colors. ... but Sunday night [removed it] with the nail polish remover."

She continued; "And I don't know. Because Melissa Gilbert had the acrylics. Melissa Sue had the acrylics. They all had the French tips. It was so in in the early eighties. And they all did and I did not. ... I said, 'I'm on a TV show and I have a full seven year contract for a TV show where apparently I live in the 1800s and don't have nails.'"

"Yeah, if it was any any later ... God, the 1930s, maybe we'd gotten away with it," Arngrim said.

Added Bob: "It is so weird that Michael Landon was like, 'Yeah. I'm cool with it. It is weird to me.' "

Michael Landon— who playedpatriarchCharles Ingalls on the show — acted as the show's producer, even directing many of the episodes.

Landon died on July 1, 1991, three months after publicly announcing his diagnosis with pancreatic cancer, and is often remembered by the cast of the show.

In a May 2025 episode the podcast, Butler said of Landon: "I think people respected Michael, but I don't think that he had that industry respect that he deserved. He captured audiences in this profound way and continues to capture audiences. In a changing world, he still is able to capture people because there's truth in what he's writing about."
