NEED TO KNOW

  • Paris Hilton got engaged to Carter Reum in February 2021 on a private island

  • He proposed with a 20-carat, emerald-cut diamond ring

  • The couple wed in November 2021

Paris Hiltonhas an engagement ring worthy of a hotel heiress.

Hilton andCarter Reumstarted a romance in 2019 after reconnecting at a Thanksgiving dinner, ultimately dating for two years before getting engaged during a February 2021 vacation. Reum popped the question with a massive, emerald-cut diamond designed by jeweler Jean Dousset.

The Simple Lifestar opened up about her engagement in a September 2021blogpost, calling her new bling "perfect" and "just gorgeous."

"I love everything about Carter, and he's changed my life in so many beautiful ways. His love has shaped me into the woman I know I was meant to be," she wrote. "Our feelings are intense and incredible, and I've never felt more alive. When Carter proposed to me, it was the best moment of my life."

Hilton and Reum wed nine months later during a three-day wedding extravaganza in California. They held their ceremony at Hilton's late grandfather's former Bel Air home, where they exchanged wedding bands. Hilton opted for a diamond eternity ring, while Reum donned a silver band.

Here's everything to know about Paris Hilton's engagement ring.

Reum worked closely with Dousset, the great-great-grandson of famous French jeweler Louis Cartier, to create Hilton's custom emerald-cut sparkler.

Speaking withThe Knotin November 2021, Dousset opened up about Reum's role in the design process.

"The one key element of this ring was that Carter was heavily invested [in the process] so that he could add as much sentiment as possible in the idealization and crafting of the ring," he said. "His focus was on how many details and personal touches, big and small, that he could add to the ring to represent how much he loves Paris."

The ring was inspired by the Grand Palais in Paris

The center stone of Hilton's engagement ring is a 20-carat, emerald-cut diamond, which is surrounded by baguette-cut and trapezoid accent diamonds, perThe Knot. The massive sparkler, estimated to be worth about $2 million, was designed to resemble the glass ceiling of the Grand Palais in Paris.

"The design of the ring derives from a combination of classical and Art Nouveau era influences. The geometric shapes of this ring are befitting to resemble the structure of the Grand Palais in Paris," Dousset toldThe Knot. "Its vaulted glass ceiling was designed to draw the maximum amount of light when large crowds were gathered, as electricity had yet to be invented."

He added, "The design is drawn from my desire to relegate the precious metal as a supporting role and maximize the ring's beauty from all points of view, so we used a special tension setting to align the diamonds seamlessly, without metal."

Named "The Paris," Hilton's engagement ring has a special hidden detail on the inside of the band.

Following the proposal, the couple's family members, includingNicky Hilton Rothschildand Courtney Reum, joined them on the beach for an intimate engagement celebration.

UK government is caught up in a feud between Trump and the BBC

LONDON (AP) — Britain's government was due to weigh in Tuesday on a feud between theBBCand U.S. President Donald Trump, who isthreatening to suethe broadcaster over the way it edited a speech he made after losing the 2020 presidential election.

Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy was set to deliver a statement on the BBC crisis in the House of Commons, with critics demanding major changes to the corporation and supporters urging the government to defend the U.K.'s public broadcaster from political interference.

Outgoing BBC Director-General Tim Davie, who announced his resignation on Sunday because of the scandal, said the BBC needed "to fight for our journalism" in the face of growing attacks.

"We have made some mistakes that have cost us," Davie acknowledged in a statement to staff, but added he was "fiercely proud" of the organization.

"I think we've got to fight for our journalism," he said.

A lawyer for Trump is demanding a retraction, apology and compensation from the broadcaster over the allegedly defamatory sequence in a documentary broadcast last year.

Fallout from the documentary has already claimed the BBC'stop executive, Davie, and head of news Deborah Turness, who both resigned over what the broadcaster called an "error of judgment."

The BBC has apologized for misleading editing of a speech Trump delivered on Jan. 6, 2021, before a crowd of his supporters stormed the Capitol in Washington.

Broadcast days before the November 2024 U.S. election, the documentary "Trump: A Second Chance?" spliced together three quotes from two sections of the speech, delivered almost an hour apart, into what appeared to be one quote in which Trump urged supporters to march with him and "fight like hell." Among the parts cut out was a section where Trump said he wanted supporters to demonstrate peacefully.

BBC chairman Samir Shah said the broadcaster accepted "that the way the speech was edited did give the impression of a direct call for violent action."

The BBC has not yet formally responded to the demand from Florida-based Tump attorney Alejandro Brito that it "retract the false, defamatory, disparaging, and inflammatory statements," apologize and "appropriately compensate President Trump for the harm caused" by Friday, or face legal action for $1 billion in damages.

The publicly funded BBC is a century-old national institution under growing pressure in an era of polarized politics and changing media viewing habits.

Funded through an annual license fee of 174.50 pounds ($230) paid by all households who watch live TV or any BBC content, the broadcaster is frequentlya political football, with conservatives seeing a leftist slant in its news output and some liberals accusing it of having a conservative bias.

Governments of both left and right have long been accused of meddling with the broadcaster, which is overseen by a board that includes both BBC nominees and government appointees.

The center-left Labour Party government has backed the BBC, without criticizing Trump, while stressing the need for the broadcaster to quickly correct its errors to maintain public trust.

"If you look at the levels of trust people have in the BBC, it's extraordinarily high," local government minister Alison McGovern told LBC radio. "If they've made an editorial mistake, then they should apologize."

  • All Her Fault — starring Sarah Snook, Dakota Fanning and Jake Lacy — was released on Peacock on Nov. 6

  • Based on Andrea Mara's 2021 novel of the same name, the series follows a mom who discovers her son Milo has been kidnapped

  • The author revealed that her novel was inspired by a real-life event that she experienced

All Her Faultdepicts every parent's worst nightmare.

Based on Andrea Mara's 2021 novel of the same name,All Her Faulttells the story of a mother, Marissa Irvine (Sarah Snook), who goes to pick up her son Milo from a playdate, only to find that the person who opens the door is a stranger who has never heard of her child.

As the search for Milo begins, more lies start unraveling amongst the characters, who are portrayed by a star-studded cast includingDakota Fanning,Jake Lacy,Jay EllisandAbby Elliot.

As tensions grow, Marissa develops an unexpected friendship with Jenny Kaminski (Fanning), despite being "set up to have a tumultuous relationship," as Fanning told PEOPLE ahead of the series release.

So, isAll Her Faulta true story? Here's everything to know about the real-life event that inspired the series.

Warning:All Her Faultspoilers ahead.

IsAll Her Faultbased on a true story?

All Her Faultis not based on a true story, but real-life events inspired it.

In a June 2021videointroducing her novel, Mara — who is also an associate producer on the series — shared that the plot is based on an experience that occurred in April 2015, when she went to collect her daughter from a playdate, only to find herself standing outside an unoccupied house.

"The panic only lasted for a few seconds, until a neighbor told me that the family had moved house a few weeks earlier and I was just working off an old address list," the author said. "It all ended very quickly, much more quickly than it does for Marissa in the book."

Mara revealed more about the incident in a July 2021 essay forThe Irish Independent, writing that she began theorizing about an "elaborate kidnap plan" after nobody answered the door for a few tries.

Though she reconnected with her daughter nearly five minutes later, the moment made Mara think about "how much trust we place in other people when it comes to our kids; when we send them off to school and crèche and playdates and parties."

"How do we decide what's safe and not safe, when it comes to our kids?" the author wrote. "And why do parents today seem to worry more than ever?"

What happens to Milo inAll Her Fault?

After Milo goes missing, Marissa and her husband Peter (Lacy) launch a frantic search for their son. Once detectives get involved, Jenny's nanny, Carrie Finch (Sophia Lillis), becomes the prime suspect. Milo is eventually returned, but Carrie — whose real name is Josephine Murphy — remains at large.

The penultimate episode flashes back six years, showing how losing her newborn at 16 drove Carrie to mental instability and fueled her obsession with Milo, ultimately leading to his kidnapping. But, viewers learn that her obsession with Milo isn't random: Carrie actually believes he is her son.

By the final episode, Carrie enters the Irvine family home — in the middle of a blowout fight between Peter, his siblings (Abby Elliot and Daniel Monks) and Marissa's longtime friend and colleague Colin Dobbs (Ellis) — and explains that she believes Milo is her son.

The series reveals that Carrie, Marissa, and Peter were involved in a devastating car accident years earlier that supposedly killed Carrie's newborn. Marissa, who was unconscious after the accident, thought that the mom, then known as Josephine, had died by suicide after the wreck. But in reality, it was Marissa's baby, not Carrie's, who died that night.

After accidentally shooting and killing Colin in a struggle for the gun she brought, Carrie insists she is only here to warn Marissa about Peter. Peter shoots Carrie before she has a chance to tell Marissa the whole story, but admits the truth to his wife just before the police arrive: he switched the newborn babies after the wreck.

By the end, Marissa learns the truth of all of Peter's actions — including that he murdered Carrie's dad, who had tried to demand a ransom in exchange for Milo — and "accidentally" kills Peter by kissing him and sending him into a severe allergic reaction from something she ate.

With Peter's death ruled an accident and the case closed, the series ends with Milo enjoying a playdate with Jenny's son after all.

What has author Andrea Mara said about theAll Her Faultadaptation?

Noam Galai/Peacock via Getty

During a June 2024 conversation withThe Irish Times, Mara discussed how many of her thriller novels are inspired by real-life stories, though she acknowledged that all of them "ended pretty quickly with reasonable explanations."

But, to lean into the fictional versions, the author said she focuses on the "what if."

"What if my child was kidnapped on a playdate, what if my child disappeared on the Tube, what if there really was someone living in the attic?" she said, referencing some of the story lines of her other novels.

In the interview, she also talked about living with Synaesthesia — the neurological condition where sensory crossovers occur — that connects Milo and Carrie inAll Her Fault.

In early November, Mara shared photos onInstagramafter attending theAll Her Faultpremiere, and opened up more about the true elements of the show.

"The book is about a missing child, yes, but it's also hugely about female friendship, and this has been carried through to the TV show," she captioned the carousel. "I know a lot about female friendship and women supporting women because of the wonderful people I'm lucky to know in real life. So even if the kidnap element of the real life inspiration is fictional, the friendship element is absolutely true."

The cast of *Special Forces: World's Toughest Test* is really thinning out.

Having gone into the season with 18 recruits, only eight of them remain. Three left on Thursday's episode, after struggling with all the physical and mental challenges that come along with being part of the Fox reality show.

The first of the three to depart was model Chanel Iman, who struggled as the group walked up a mountain for one of their daunting tasks. When she fell behind the others, she was told by the Directing Staff that she'd better catch up or face having her armband taken from her, which would signal that she was done.

But that wasn't enough. When the group's lead grew even more, Iman was told, "You just lost your team and any chance to stay on this course."

In the same episode, former NFL player Eric Decker was called in to see the medic, after he aggravated a previous injury. He was told what recruits don't want to hear: "I don't think we can really safely let you carry on."**

When he arrived back at the barracks and told his wife what had happened, she said that she wanted to head home with him. "We ride together, we fly together," she said.**

(Reuters) -Industrial companies have been on a roller-coaster this year as they tried to adjust to the shifting trade policies of U.S. President Donald Trump, but this quarter, executives suggested the confusion may be receding as corporations have had time to adjust to higher levies on U.S. imports of foreign goods.

Unlike in the first half of the year, some of the U.S. bellwethers that reflect the "real economy" - heavy machinery, engine makers and construction firms - have navigated the environment with strong demand, cost-cutting and price increases to offset the Trump administration's tariffs. While there are still plenty of concerns about coming quarters, the unpredictability factor has faded, executives say.

"Certainly, from a cost standpoint and maybe from a demand standpoint ... tariffs are no longer the kind of the main event here," Michael Larsen, chief financial officer at Illinois Tool Works, said on a post-result analyst call last week.

Companies that have reported results between October 16 and October 31 put the total estimated hit to global companies' bottom lines at about $7 billion, according to a Reuters analysis, though the markets are still only about midway through the earnings season globally. In the second quarter, that figure was estimated at a range of $16.2 billion to $17.9 billion.

U.S. industrial companies at present are reporting their best year-over-year revenue growth since the first quarter of 2023 at 6.3%, according to data compiled by LSEG.

Over the summer, equipment maker Caterpillar estimated tariffs would cost the firm between $1.5 billion and $1.8 billion in 2025. In results released on October 29, it narrowed that range to $1.6 billion to $1.75 billion after reporting a strong quarter, and its shares rose 12%.

"Generally speaking, industrial companies are doing a pretty good job managing through the uncertainty and the changes in the tariff landscape," said Joshua Schachter, chief investment officer at Easterly Asset Management.

Logistics giants UPS and FedEx cut costs to offset the scrapping of duty-free status for low-value e-commerce shipments. However, UPS has also sharply cut its payrolls, jettisoning 48,000 jobs in the face of continued pressure on its business this year.

Analysts fear the bleak outlook among lower- and middle-income earners that has hit consumer companies like Newell will reach other parts of the economy. In addition, the Trump administration reached agreements with numerous nations that set levies on foreign imports for many between 15% and 20% - after a previous pause left them at 10%. That effect has not yet been fully felt.

"This is the real beginning of when the effects of tariffs would have hit," said Angela Santos, partner and customs practice group leader at ArentFox Schiff. "We're only in October and the increases for reciprocal tariffs started in August, so it hasn't been that long."

Some European companies that rely on U.S. sales have had it worse, as U.S. importers are less likely to buy their products due to the high levies.

SKF, a Swedish bearings maker considered a global manufacturing barometer, expects weak short-term demand as customers remain hesitant due to tariffs and uncertainty. "If we can get a bit more calm and stability, then I think we will see demand return," SKF CEO Rickard Gustafson told Reuters on Wednesday.

Swedish construction equipment maker HIAB told Reuters that orders have been slowing since mid-February due to trade tensions.

The German Engineering Federation VDMA, which represents 3,600 machinery and plant engineering companies, has warned that more than half of German and European machinery exports could be hit with new tariffs if Washington includes more products on its list of aluminum and steel levies. European car makers like Volkswagen have been hit particularly hard, with the latter flagging a $5.8 billion tariff hit in its most recent results.

Yale's Budget Lab, which has been tracking trade policies, says the effective U.S. tariff rate stood at 18% as of mid-October, highest in more than 90 years.

The Trump Administration's new 25% tariffs on imported medium- and heavy-duty trucks and parts are scheduled to start on November 1, including dump trucks and tractors for 18-wheelers, alongside a 10% tariff on imported buses.

The full effects are still to be felt as industrial companies are going through inventory that hasn't been hit with tariffs yet, said Don Marleau, managing director for metals and capital goods at S&P Global.

"In a lot of cases, we don't have higher tariff costs yet. We have higher estimates for tariff costs."

Sam Darnold passed for 330 yards and four touchdowns, and the Seattle Seahawks routed the Washington Commanders 38-14 for their third straight win Sunday night in Landover, Md.

Darnold tied the franchise record by completing his first 17 passes and finished 21 of 24. He threw one interception.

Washington's Jayden Daniels, returning after missing one game with a hamstring injury, left in the fourth quarter after sustaining what sustained what coach Dan Quinn confirmed after the game is a left elbow injury when the quarterback was sacked by Drake Thomas. Daniels had completed 16 of 22 passes for 153 yards and one interception and also ran for a touchdown and 51 yards.

ESPN reported later Sunday night that Daniels has a dislocated left elbow. He is scheduled for an MRI on Monday and is expected to be sidelined indefinitely, though it's not certain to be a season-ending injury.

Jaxon Smith-Njigba had eight catches for 129 yards for Seattle (6-2), and Tory Horton had four catches for 48 yards and two touchdowns.

Seattle outgained Washington 418-290.

The Seahawks remained undefeated on the road (4-0), while the reeling Commanders (3-6) lost their fourth straight game.

The Seahawks led 31-7 at halftime. Tight end AJ Barner capped a 60-yard drive when he took a direct snap and scored from the 1 late in the third quarter.

One play after Daniels was injured, Chris Rodriguez Jr. scored on a 4-yard run with 7:14 left to play.

Seattle went 90 yards in 12 plays on its first drive. Darnold threw a 4-yard touchdown pass to Horton and the Seahawks led 7-0.

The Seahawks then broke it open with two touchdowns in 11 seconds.

Seven plays after Daniels was intercepted by Ty Okada at the Seattle 40, Horton beat Mike Sainristil off the line and Darnold found him in the end zone for a 25-yard touchdown.

When Jaylin Lane fumbled the kick-off, Seattle recovered on the Washington 26, and on the next play, Darnold hit Elijah Arroyo, whose first NFL touchdown made it 21-0 with 8:41 left in the first half.

After a false start penalty wiped out a fourth-and-1 conversion, Washington punted. Seattle started at the 13, and four plays later the score was 28-0.

Darnold hit Smith-Njigba for 22 yards and then found Cody White, who went 60 yards for his first NFL touchdown.

The Commanders got on the board with 53 seconds left in the half after a 10-play, 68-yard drive. Daniels ran 12 yards to the 1-yard line and scored on the next play.

Jason Myers hit a 41-yard field goal as the half ended to make it 31-7.

Darnold finished the half 16-for-16 passing for 282 yards and four touchdowns.

Nothing went quite right for the Houston Texans as they narrowly lost to the Denver Broncos after a bunch of self-inflicted mishaps. And lost their starting quarterback, CJ Stroud, to a concussion after he was hit by Broncos CB Kris Abrams-Draine. Backup QB Davis Mills knows that the offense was entirely at fault today.

The only reason the Texans came out with a loss tonight was that the offense failed to capitalize on some really positive drives, which Mills admitted in the post-game presser.

"We were operating really well. Had a lot of really good drives. Kinda just sputtered out when we got into the red zone. We get down to the one-yard line twice, (in the) red zone four or five times. Gotta come out of these drives with touchdowns instead of field goals," he remarked.

Yes, Mills was more than adequate tonight. He was steady, didn't make an error. He looked comfortable out there. It was just the fact that Houston couldn't finish their drives. Despite Denver playing its worst special teams game of the season, the Texans couldn't make their opportunities count.

Zero touchdowns. That's the story. Three snaps from the one-yard line, nothing. Two more from the two, same result. On a day when Bo Nix is putting on a bad show after weeks of strong output, failing to outscore the Broncos is a big letdown.

Those drives should've been 14 points in the bag for the Texans. When your opponent is playing their worst game of the season, you're supposed to bury them instead of joining them in the mud. The Texans will now face the Jaguars, who are ahead of them in the AFC South, probably without CJ Stroud. And if they end up losing this… that's their playoff hopes gone.

DeMeco Ryans criticizes the referee's decision

In a season where the NFL seems to be throwing flags for every minor infraction, somehow the Broncos' cornerback managed to skate free after slamming CJ Stroud's head into the turf. The officials initially threw a flag for unnecessary roughness, but surprisingly, picked it up.

The explanation was that Stroud supposedly started his slide too late, and the hit wasn't "direct" to the head. You can debate that all you want, but it's tough to look at the play and not question a hit that ended up giving your starting quarterback a concussion. From a coach's perspective, that is frustrating. And he didn't shy away from calling out the referee's decision.

"He hit the quarterback when he was sliding and giving himself up. If I'm incorrect on the rules, I've seen that happen multiple times with our guys, and we get the penalty," HC Ryans said.

Well, Abrams-Draine might've walked out of the game without a penalty, but the Texans' HC might've risked himself a fine by openly questioning it.

Now the focus shifts to next week against the Jaguars. CJ Stroud's participation is contingent upon the results of the concussion protocol. If Stroud can't go, Davis Mills will take over under center. And as long as they can finish decent drives, it shouldn't be a problem. If they can't, they can say goodbye to playoffs.
