Constance Wu has called out Andrew Barth Feldman for his 'Maybe Happy Ending' casting

Constance Wu says she's "so disappointed" in actor Andrew Barth Feldman.

The Fresh Off the Boat actress' opinion stems from Feldman, who is white, accepting the male lead in Broadway's Maybe Happy Ending, which is set in Seoul, South Korea. She and other critics say that an actor of Asian or Pan-Pacific Island descent should take over the leading male role from Filipino actor Darren Criss.

"Recently, @andrewbfeldman_ reached out to me to talk and we had an in-depth phone call about Asian American representation and erasure in theater. It was a peaceful call and we spoke at length, followed up by several emails/texts," Wu explained in a social media post. "It made me hopeful. But after a recent voice memo he sent me, all I can say is that I am so disappointed in him."

She's not the first to criticize Feldman for replacing the departing Criss, who won the Tony for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical at the ceremony in June, becoming the first Asian American actor to do so. (The show was also named Best Musical.)

After Feldman's casting was announced in July, actor B.D. Wong, who's known for his roles in movies such as Jurassic Park and shows including Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, started a petition that called for an Asian actor to take the job. More than 2,400 people, including Broadway stars, added their names.

Wu referenced the petition in her post, in which she also explained that she's been "feeling pretty discouraged" and like no one is listening. She apologized to "the thousands of people on @wongdb's petition whose signatures he and the producers have yet to publicly acknowledge."

"Once again," she wrote, "Asian Americans are left unheard, unacknowledged, invisible. Sadly, we're used to this."

She requested that cast and crew members from the show speak out instead of waiting for the controversy to "fade away," which she sees as already happening.

The Crazy Rich Asians star also apologized to Feldman that he had "been (perhaps unfairly) saddled with this responsibility by your producers. But sometimes we don't choose our responsibilities, they choose us. So the question that remains is: what are you choosing to do with it?"

EW has reached out to reps for Feldman and the show.

Feldman, who's dating the show's lead actress, Helen J. Shen, won't be in the show for long, though. He first played the part of Oliver in the Sept. 2 production, and is scheduled to hand it back to Criss before he returns in November, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
