The holiday grind is more merriment than misery for Al Pitrelli.
As a core member of Trans-Siberian Orchestra since 1996, he's watched the Christmas-themed touring production that meshes sensory overload, majestic guitar overtones and overt sentimentality commandeer the country every November and December with remarkable consistency.
And he still loves every moment of it.
"It's like watching one of your kids grow up," the loquacious Pitrelli tells USA TODAY exclusively. "As infants you love them and as grownups you love them. People come out two, three, four times. I look out at the audience and recognize people because I've been seeing them for 25 years. Now they're holding up their babies in the air like Rafiki in 'The Lion King.'"
Trans-Siberian Orchestra will play 64 markets and 106 concerts across the country during the holiday season in 2025.
TSO will check off another year of bicoastal celebrations with the 2025 Ghosts of Christmas Eve: The Best of TSO & More tour, a 64-city, 106-concert marathon that kicks off Nov. 13 concurrently in Wisconsin and Iowa.
Tickets for the shows go on sale Sept. 4 for members of the TSO fan club, with other presales starting at 10 a.m. local time Sept. 11. The public ticket sales begin at 10 a.m. local time Sept. 12 at trans-siberian.com.
Along with a new production of "The Ghosts of Christmas Eve," spotlighting the music performed in the 1999 TV special crafted primarily by late founder, composer and lyricist Paul O'Neill, is a second set of fan favorites.
What music is TSO playing on its 2025 tour?
Playing the works of the lauded composer also injects the touring juggernaut with musical variety, something Pitrelli, who will be 63 when the tour begins, appreciates.
"I love playing some of these pieces because they're very intricate and I'm not just playing three power chords," he says. "We like to mix it up for (the audience) and for us. We have a lot of repeat offenders at the shows and our job is to keep them on their heels. They want their favorites, but the production team works all year to make sure the visuals look different."
How many people are in Trans-Siberian Orchestra?
Trans-Siberian Orchestra guitarist Al Pitrelli has been part of the core band since 1996.
Putting on a TSO production – a dizzying collection of lasers timed to guitar solos, pyro backdropping "Christmas Eve/Sarajevo 12/24" and "Wizards in Winter" – is a Herculean task. Each touring set, dubbed East and West, includes 10-12 singers, a seven-piece band and six string players. Last year, 12 buses per tour shuttled the performers through their whirlwind schedule while 21 tractors did the literal heavy lifting of stage production. And rehearsals? About 300 combined hours for a new show. "We've been together so long, it's a military operation," Pitrelli says. "The bands have wonderful chemistry and I never want to change that."
TSO brings back the autograph signing line in 2025
Trans-Siberian Orchestra's 2025 tour, The Ghosts of Christmas Eve: The Best of TSO and More, will feature an all-new production of their beloved "The Ghosts of Christmas Eve" album as well as a 25th-anniversary salute to "Beethoven's Last Night."
Since its inception 30 years ago, TSO has maintained a promise – established by O'Neill – to donate $1 per ticket to local charities in each market played.
Last season, the band sold its 20 millionth ticket.
But the other signature of a TSO show is – or was until COVID – the signing line.
After every performance, a long line of fans would hang in the arena to share a brief moment or get an autograph from members of TSO for free.
It was a sweet tradition that was shelved for practical reasons when the band made a post-pandemic return to the road in 2021 (the 2020 shows were presented virtually).
"God forbid one of us got sick," Pitrelli says. "We don't have the window to reschedule tour dates. We couldn't sit at a table with 800 people coming by to shake hands."
But Pitrelli and the TSO family decided this was the year "to get back into the world."
"Sometimes we're out there 90 minutes and I promise you, no one is watching their watch," he says. "We owe these people. They put us on the map and keep this going."
