The most celebrated composer of film music in history has some surprising thoughts about the art form.
John Williams, the Oscar-winning composer behind the themes for "Star Wars," "E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial," "Jaws" and countless other movies, told biographer Tim Greiving in an interview for a new book, "I never liked film music very much," according to The Guardian.
"Film music, however good it can be — and it usually isn't, other than maybe an eight-minute stretch here and there ... I just think the music isn't there," Williams, 93, said. "That, what we think of as this precious great film music is ... we're remembering it in some kind of nostalgic way."
He continued, "Just the idea that film music has the same place in the concert hall as the best music in the canon is a mistaken notion, I think. A lot of (film music) is ephemeral. It's certainly fragmentary and, until somebody reconstructs it, it isn't anything that we can even consider as a concert piece."

Greiving, who conducted the interviews with Williams and authored the biography "John Williams: A Composer's Life," said he was surprised by the statements.
"His comments are sort of shocking, and they are not false modesty," Greiving told The Guardian. "He is genuinely self-deprecating, and deprecating of 'film music' in general."
The author added that Williams has an "internalised prejudice against film music," which he sees as "a functional type of music, which is funny because I consider his film music to be kind of sublime art at its best. That's not modesty. He's just saying it's a lesser art form."

In a follow-up article for The Hollywood Reporter, Greiving clarified that Williams wasn't being "glib or ungrateful" and made the comments while talking about putting film music on a concert program.
"He told me that, when he was music director of the Boston Pops from 1980 to 1993, he struggled with the logistical task of programming music that had been expressly written for movies," Greiving wrote in The Hollywood Reporter.
The composer "admittedly spoke often with me about the inherent limitations and weaknesses of film music as an art form, especially in relation to the great classical repertoire," Greiving said. But the biographer underscored that Williams "was not saying that he isn't proud of his own work, or that he regrets spending a lifetime scoring films."
Greiving also emphasized that Williams wasn't criticizing modern film music, noting he "doesn't watch films and doesn't listen to film scores" but spoke optimistically about where the art form can go.
John Williams composed Olympic gold before 1984 LA Olympics
Williams has been composing scores for decades and has written many of the most recognizable themes in movie history for films like "Close Encounters of the Third Kind," "Jurassic Park," "Superman," "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" and more. He has more Oscar nominations, 54, than any other living person, and has won five times, for "Fiddler on the Roof," "Jaws," "Star Wars," "E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial" and "Schindler's List."

Williams has continued to compose film music into his 90s and has kept up his long-time collaboration with Steven Spielberg. He composed the music for the director's most recent film, "The Fabelmans," as well as all three films in the "Star Wars" sequel trilogy. His most recent movie score was for 2023's "Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny."

Williams was also known for his jazz music early in his career. In fact, in the documentary "Music by John Williams," George Lucas recalled being confused when Spielberg suggested hiring Williams to compose the score for "Star Wars." "Isn't he a jazz pianist?" Lucas remembered asking.
In the documentary, Williams reflected that a "series of fortuitous accidents" led to his career as a film composer. "I cannot tell you that, as a young man in my early 20s, I intended to do anything else professionally but play the piano," he said.
In 2023, Williams confirmed he has no plans to retire and will continue working with Spielberg on his films. "You can't retire from music," he said, according to Variety. "I said earlier, it's like breathing. It's your life. It's my life. And so a day without music is a mistake."
